My firefox browser crashes randomly: reports included

more options

This has been going on for quite some time now. The earliest two crashes in the report were fixed by uninstalling and reinstalling firefox, but the more recent crashes in the list are typical of the kinds of crashes I have been getting for a long time. I've tried looking for help on these forums but since problems need a specific diagnosis I had to make my own thread. Anyways, here are the crash reports. Thank you for your help.

Er...well I thought I had included the crashes the first time. Since I can't figure out how to edit my message, I've included them in this reply.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window or otherwise make changes.

In Firefox Safe mode these changes are effective:

  • all extensions are disabled
  • the default theme is used (no persona)
  • userChrome.css and userContent.css are ignored
  • the default toolbar layout is used (localstore-safe.rdf)
  • the Javascript JIT compiler is disabled
  • hardware acceleration is disabled
  • plugins are not affected
  • preferences are not affected

The browser crashes even in safe mode, though apparently less often.

Do you notice any pattern when the crashes occur like when visiting specific websites?

Try to boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software: Adwcleaner

Avast! is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

I have anti-virus software. I ran it and one of the programs you suggested and they said I have no problems. I'm still getting crashes, though they sometimes start up and stop suddenly, almost like a cold.

Hello,

Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.

You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).

Then perform these steps:

  • Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
  • In the Firefox options window click the Advanced tab, then select "General".
  • In the settings list, you should find the Use hardware acceleration when available checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
  • Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.

Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:

Didn't work. I already have that box unchecked and it still crashes.

Launch Firefox and see if it crashes there, report back with results.

It didn't seem to crash in safe mode. I didn't spend a whole lot of time in safe mode, but let's assume it won't crash. What does that mean?

more options

Have you tried resetting Firefox

more options

I think I might have before but it won't hurt to try again. I'll let you know if it crashes again...

more options

Nope, crashed again. So the crash reports don't help you diagnose the problem at all?

more options

Have youve tried disabling some browser plugins? You do have many of those and that seems to be a possible problem.

more options

Well I've run firefox in safe mode and still had it crash; aren't plug-ins disabled in safe mode?

more options

No they are not.

more options

Well I disabled everything but Shockwave Flash and Adobe Acrobat and it still crashes.
