Thunderbird sending email notifications of new messages to an account that does not exist

A disabled friend of mine uses IMAP at Fastmail as her email service provider. Some time back I set up either her Fastmail account and/or Thunderbird mail client to send me a message each time she receives an email. The idea was for me to be able to let her know when she received something important. I need to stop that new, and I do not know how. She is receiving about 10 undelivered message notification emails per minute about those messages to my address being undelivered.

I own a domain name, and most of the email that is sent to me is addressed to that domain name. For years I have had both a primary email account with Fastmail, and a backup account with Tuffmail. The Tuffmail emal service closed down yesterday, permanently. I did not foresee a problem. I then discovered that I set things up years ago so that MX records directed emails to addresses at my domain name to Tuffmail account first; Tuffmail then forwarded them to my account at Fastmail. So for now, with Tuffmail gone, I am not receiving emails addressed to my domain name. I am working on fixing that MX problem but have not yet solved it.

She has gone through numerous Thunderbird updates over the years and is now using version 91.4.1, I believe--downloaded from Portable Apps.com.

I have looked for how I set up either my friend's Fastmail account or her Thunderbird client to send me emails from her address that say only "New email from [name]," but I have not been able to see it. If anyone knows how I might have done that--a long time ago now--PLEASE help me to stop it. Every time one of those messages gets sent, another email comes in telling her that I did not receive the email sent to tell me of the just previous undelivered email

Thank you, and Happy New Year for 2022.

Hi - one place to look is in Filters - Thunderbird or her webmail may have a filter rule sending a copy. While you are looking at filters you could create one to delete the incoming loop ones while you figure this out.

You are a lifesaver, AgnesRM! Thank you! Looking again, I still did not find a rule that I must have set up somewhere to cause those new message arrival notifications to be sent. But I did set up a rule to delete the undelivered message notifications when they arrive back to her from my email service. Somehow I had not thought to do that. A side effect is that the number of such notifications is way down. Apparently, her account is not trying to send me a new message notification when a message is deleted on arrival. Whew! Thank you again!

Glad to lift the burden a bit! If there is nothing in filters in either the online webmail or her Tbird, does her webmail service allow automatic email forwarding? Good luck in the hunt.

Dear AgnesRM,

Yes I think Fastmail does allow rules for forwarding some or all messages that are received. But the messages her account sends me are not forwarded messages, but only a single line in the subject line, repeated in the text, saying that she has received a new message and the name of the person who sent it.

But after having spent time in a couple of days and nights deleting undelivered message notifications, the whole problem is now over.

You may be glad to hear that the problem of my not receiving emails addressed to my domain name is now over also. I had to pay Fastmail for an "upgrade" to my account to be able to fix that. So I am now getting the notifications of new messages from my friend's account along with everything else, and everything is back to normal.

Thank you again, ! Larry A. Scott
