Log In Failed - Enter New Password
Hi Guys,
I've been using TB for a while now, along with the several email accounts, including: Hotmail, Outlook, Mail.com & to a lesser degree Supanet !?
Every now and then, when trying to Send, I get the message "Log In Failed - Enter New Password". I usually just click the red cross a couple of times, & it goes away. I never need to input a new password,,,,
but, today its one of the Mail.com accounts. I've been on their own site and sent the message. There isn't a problem with Mail.com, or my settings. As usual, it worked fine until today.
I tried inputting the current p.w and creating a new one, but to no avail.
How do I fix this please ?

I'm glad to see that the 'colouration' problem was fixed.

You can only create, modify, etc a password via the webmail account. If you created a new password, then you will need to update the saved password in Thunderbird.
if the password was remembered, this is how to remove it.
- 'Tools' > 'Options' > 'Security' > 'Passwords' tab
- click on 'Saved passwords'
- click on 'show passwords'
If Thunderbird password manager was instructed to remember passwords, they will show up in the list. There will be be two, one called mailbox and the other smtp for the mail.com mail account.
- Highlight both and click on 'Remove'
- then click on 'Close'
- then click on OK to save changes to Options.
- Close and reopen Thunderbird.
On startup, Thunderbird will attempt to check for new mail, it should prompt for a password. enter the same password you use to access the webmail account. Make sure you select the checkbox for Password Manager to remember the password and click on OK.
Thanks for this. Before I delete anything, I have reached 'Saved Passwords'. As you will be aware, there are two listings per name; one smtp and one mailbox. I assume one is for receiving & one is for sending. Firstly, I only have one listing for this address - smtp/smtp, which I assume is for receiving ?
Do I just delete this ? Any idea why this one might only have the one listing ?
Also, some have 4 listings; Imap Pop Pop3 Smtp
How do I know which is which ?
Thanks again
It sounds as if you do not have the password saved for that account for incoming mail.
Please post this info so i can work out which is which:

you can edit/remove all info on fonts and printers, but nothing else.
Thank you, I'm sorry, I'm not quite sure what you mean.
Firstly, I was using this account this morning - all o.k.
Secondly, I don't see Troubleshooting in my Tools.

Thanks for your help so far. I think this particular problem is fixed, but as it happens quite often, I have included the details that you asked for, in the hope that you can help me to either clean it up, or see any anomalies.

If it doesn't look much good, I can forward it as a 4 page Word file, so that you see it 'as laid out'.
According to the info you supplied, you have three pop mail.com mail accounts:
account5 (pop3) pop.mail.com:110 alwaysSTARTTLS passwordCleartext smtp.mail.com:587 alwaysSTARTTLS passwordCleartext true
account18 (pop3) pop.mail.com:995 SSL passwordCleartext smtp.mail.com:465 SSL passwordCleartext true
account19 (pop3) pop.mail.com:995 SSL passwordCleartext smtp.mail.com:465 SSL passwordCleartext true
So I'm not sure which of these caused the problem.
However, account5, does not use the same settings.
As it uses port 110, there will be no Connection Security, so I'm intregued by the connection security set as 'STARTTLS' when I would have expected this to say 'None'. Maybe it ignores the 'STARTTLS' because the port setting 110 does not use it.
Now, you say everything is ok at the moment which is good news, but if this was the account that had a problem and you get further issues, you could try to change the settings so that it uses the same as the other two.
you change them here: Tools > Account Settings > Server Settings for the mail account
these are the settings that can be used:
Incoming server name: pop.mail.com If using port 110 connection security: None
If using port 995 connection security: SSL/TLS
Outgoing smtp server name: smtp.mail.com If using port 465 connection security: SSL/TLS
If using port 587 connection security: STARTTLS
Thanks for your kind help. It was indeed Account 18 that was at fault – this time.
I haven’t touched the settings since setting the programme up some years ago, and forgot everything since !
I recall that some settings would not be accepted by TB at the time, hence different ports & settings.
Whilst I’m into this section, I would like to clean my TB system up - I would prefer everything to be the same - looking at my list, is that possible ?
b) I see that account 12 has two listings; one says True and the other says False. As this si the only ‘false’ in the list, I assume it’s wrong ? Can I delete just that bit ?
c) I see account 25 has some details missing. I assume that I might need to know those details at some stage ?
d) Is Supanet any more acceptable to TB than it was years ago ?
Many many thanks
account12 (imap) imap.googlemail.com:993 SSL passwordCleartext smtp.googlemail.com:465 SSL passwordCleartext true smtp.googlemail.com:465 SSL passwordCleartext false
This account seems to have two identites. Perhaps you have two email addresses going to one account. You can check this: Tools > Account Settings for the account12 mail account click on 'Manage Identites' button You should see the top one in bold, this is the default identity and this is why it says 'true' = smtp.googlemail.com:465 SSL passwordCleartext true
the second one in the list may show a different email address, but it will not be default so shows 'false' = smtp.googlemail.com:465 SSL passwordCleartext false. If this second one is the same as the first one or you have set another mail account using that email address, you could delete it as an identity.
account25 (rss) Feeds plain passwordCleartext This is a RSS account. You have set up an account to subscribe to receive/download news/blog feeds, There is no set up to be able to reply/send emails via this account, hence why it does not have an smtp server.
Thanks again,
There were two email addresses there. The correct one (GMail) and a Supanet one ! This is one of my existing supanet accounts, so I deleted it - no more 'false' readings. I have no idea why I put it there.
Do all the other ports/security things look o.k now ?
