Current issues in the French support forum

  1. I would like to report some current issues in the French support forum that don't have obvious answers in the KB:

    • Common:
      • Q: How do I fully uninstall Search or Babylon? A: Scan with AdwCleaner
      • Q: How do I get rid of ad popups? A: It's caused by malware. Scan with Malwarebyte.
      • Q: How can I translate websites into French (Google Toolbar and Chrome do it)? A: Use Flagfox for full pages, gTranslate for selected text, make a Javascript bookmark with Google Translate (see this post)
      • Q: Why does my homepage say Firefox is not up-to-date while it is? A: It's caused by the old default homepage. Set it to about:home.
      • Q: How do I avoid to be geolocalized? A: There's no easy way.
      • Q: How do I update Firefox on Mac OS X 10.4? (the latest ready-for-l10n revision of Firefox won't start - find solutions dates from December 2010) A: On an Intel processor, update to Mac OS X 10.5. On a PPC processor, use TenFourFox that is currently only in English.
    • Recent with Fx 9:
      • Q: Firefox hangs while playing Flash videos. A: It's caused by Ask. Scan with AdwCleaner
      • Q: Why does Firefox ask to reinstall add-ons on each startup? A: Update BitDefender 2010 to 2012.

  2. Thanks Scoobidiver,
Some of the work that the taxonomist did pointed to many of these. Do you know of place to download AdwCleaner that looks legit? The places I see when I search all look kind of sketchy. We're trying to work out what to do about Babylon here. Also, can you expand on the problem and solution in that last item in your list? Thanks,
    Michael

The first search result in Google is the right place because Xplode is a French developer that doesn't have a dedicated website. This tool detects and removes the toolbars described in the changelog

can you expand on the problem and solution in that last item in your list?

BitDefender 2010 is no longer maintained although the BD database is. So even when its related BD toolbar 2.0 is disabled, on startup, there's an open tab per extension starting with about:newaddon?id= and every extensions are disabled (see this post). Either you must upgrade to BD 2012 for free or, as many people don't like that new version, edit a registry key.

  5. Here are new hot topics:

    • Q: How do I remove the red border around Firefox? A: Exclude Firefox from the autosandbox in the new Avast! Antivirus 7.
    • Q: Where do I find the missing plugin for reports generated by SAP BO WebIntelligence? A: Update SAP BO WebIntelligence because old versions don't detect the Java plugin.
    • Q: How do I remove Google from Firefox because of its new privacy policy? A: Choose a new default search engine in Search Bar and set keyword.URL to the new search engine URL. For instance, DuckDuckGo is a new meta search engine that respects your privacy.

  6. Kudos to Scoobi!

And btw (Rosana?), could we have the same summary from other larger locales, like DE, PT-BR, JP, ZN...?

  7. There's a spike in:

    • Q: How do I remove a username entry in Facebook or webmails so that other users of the computer don't login to my account? A: Your usernames/passwords are accessible in self-service to any user of the computer, so removing an entry won't prevent another user from login to your account. Use separate OS accounts with a locked screen saver instead.
