How do I get my accounts back after they're apparently deleted and setting up accounts again isn't working?

I was using my email. I shut down the computer. About a half hour later, I booted up, and Thunderbird is now empty. I had about 10 email accounts going to it. Now there are none. It's asking me if I want to set up an account and start getting mail.

I tried to set up my main email address again, entered my name, email address and password. After searching for the account, the software gave me this message: "Configuration found in Mozilla ISP database"

I click the "Done" button, it searches more, and I get this message:

"Configuration could not be verified --- Is the username or password wrong?"

I went to webmail and successfully looked at my mail in my browser, using my password, so I know my password is right.

I changed the username so it's just the part before the @ and I got: "Configuration could not be verified --- Is the username or password wrong?"

In the lower left of the software, on the task bar, is this message, just hanging there:

"Sending login information..."

Any ideas what's going on? Grateful for any suggestions.
