There is something called recently bookmarked (rbm'd) in the bookmarks (bm's) list. When I bookmark (bm) a site and tell it to appear in a folder in the bm menu, I appears in both places. The problem is if I delete the bm in the rbm'd list, it is also deleted in my folder. In the old days, When you put a bm in a folder, it stayed there until you deleted it. what is the purpose of the rbm'd list? how many entries will show up in it? Is there a way to limit that number? Thanks. Jim

I have 5 sites, bookmark another and it replaces 1 in the list.

I Gather you do not like it so just click Bookmarks so shows the drop down list and put your mouse up to Recently Bookmarked and Right Click and Hide

Some information about so called smart bookmarks folders.

  • "Most Visited" and "Recently Bookmarked" and "Recent Tags" are examples of so called Smart Bookmarks folders and are not real existing folders
  • smart folders show a list created by a query of the places.sqlite database that stores bookmarks and history in Firefox
  • most smart folder lists show a maximum of 10 entries by default
  • bookmark and history items that show up in a smart folder list are stored elsewhere in another folder and any changes made are applied to the real bookmark or history item
  • bookmarks created by clicking the star on the Navigation toolbar are created in the "Other Bookmarks" folder (formerly named "Unsorted")
  • bookmarks created by clicking "Bookmark This Page" (Ctrl+D) are created in the Bookmarks Menu folder
  • if you remove an entry then the list is shifted up and a new entry that wasn't shown previously is added to show 10 entries
  • if you add a new bookmark or visit a website then a new item is added at the top and the entry at the bottom disappears from that list
  • items that disappear from the list are not gone, but merely do not show up anymore in that list.
  • actions like copy & paste or delete that you perform on bookmarks in such a list are done on the original bookmark
  • if you do not want a specific list then remove that query (right-click: Delete), but do not delete the content that is displayed in such a list
  • you can hide the newly added "Recently Bookmarked" section via the right-click context menu (Hide Recently Bookmarked)

The Recently Bookmarked section of the Bookmarks Menu is not a folder. It shows the results of a live query across all if your bookmarks (Menu, Toolbar, Other) for the five bookmarks added most recently. Similarly to the smart folder that cor-el described, you cannot change how this works. However, as Pkshadow described, you can hide it by right-clicking that section and clicking Hide Recently Bookmarked.

That section does take up a lot of premium real estate, so I hide it. However, I also created a separate smart folder so I can see the 20 most recently added bookmarks there if I want to. To do that, see: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1136252#answer-910157

Sounds to me like a form of tracking. Jim

Cor-el.

So, if I could find this "smart" folder (I prefer to call it stupid and useless), and deleted it, Everything I bookmarked since it was created would disappear from my bookmarks menu? Jim

You can't delete this folder if this is the section you see in the Bookmarks Menu drop-down list. In the menu drop-down list you can only hide this content.

There are real smart folders ("Most Visited", "Recently Bookmarked", "Recent Tags") that you can find in the Bookmarks Toolbar folder and such folders can be deleted like regular bookmarks.

Note that there is a difference between deleting a smart folder and deleting items you see in this folder. If you delete the folder then you remove the list and not its content, so you won't lose bookmarks.

Thanks for that info. I deleted the recently bookmarked folder and my bookmarks I had in my folder on the bookmarks menu. One more question then I'll go away. Are the bookmarks that were in the recent folder still lurking somewhere on my computer? Jim

Lurking???

The Recent folder always shows your ten most recently added bookmarks. They were bookmarks in your bookmarks.

I guess I totally don't understand your question.

I'll add something to my question then, maybe, you'll understand.

Are the bookmarks that were in the recent folder That I deleted still stored somewhere on my computer?

If you deleted the individual bookmarks -- you no longer see them anywhere in bookmarks in Firefox -- then they would be only in a backup.

Backups

Firefox makes backups of your bookmarks at regular intervals (daily or so?). Bookmarks and folders you deleted might be in a recent backup.

Backup files are compressed, so they are difficult to read. However if you want to see where they are:

Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the first table on the page, click the "Open Folder" button. This should launch a new window listing various files and folders in Windows Explorer.

Double-click the bookmarkbackups folder. Here you should find some backup files. If you wanted to restore one and roll your bookmarks back to that date/time, see: Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer.

Thank you for that very helpful information and the links to get more. This is a great community and, to all the people who have responded to my question, I say thanks. Jim
