How to Manage Your Camera and Microphone Permissions with Firefox

From Firefox, you can enable or block sites from accessing any one of your device’s cameras and microphones. There are many different ways to enable or block camera and microphone permissions depending upon the device that you’re using. This article outlines each method below.

Using Prompts to Enable or Block Camera and Microphone Permissions for a Site

You can easily enable camera and microphone permissions by simply accessing relevant sites from your Firefox browser.

To use prompts to enable or block camera and microphone permissions for a site:

  1. Open Firefox and go to the desired site.
  2. A confirmation pop-up displays asking if you want to share your device’s camera and microphone with that site. Your device’s default camera and microphone is selected from the designated drop-downs.
  3. Select a different camera and/or microphone if necessary.
  4. Select the Remember this decision checkbox if you want Firefox to remember your selections for this site so that they can be used by default in the future.
  5. Click the Allow button if you want to share these devices with the site.
  6. Click the Don’t Allow button if you don’t want to share these devices with the site.
Please note that you may not be able to use certain features or the site altogether if you block camera and microphone access.

Using Your Firefox Preferences Menu to Change Camera and Microphone Permissions via a Computer

Changing Camera Permissions

  1. Click the menu button New Fx Menu Fx57Menu and choose Options.Preferences.
  2. Click Privacy & Security from the left menu.
  3. Scroll down to the Permissions section.
  4. Click the Settings… button for the Camera option.
  5. Enter the website URL in the Search field for the site that you want to access your camera.
  6. Press the Enter key.

The website displays in the list below. You can remove it at any time by selecting it from the list and clicking the Remove Website.

  1. Select the Block new requests asking to access your camera checkbox if you do not want to give any other sites access to your camera.
  2. Click the Save Changes button.

Changing Microphone Permissions

Click the menu button New Fx Menu Fx57Menu and choose Options.Preferences.

  1. Click Privacy & Security from the left menu.
  2. Scroll down to the Permissions section.
  3. Click the Settings... button for the Microphone option.
  4. Enter the website URL in the Search field for the site that you want to access your camera.
  5. Press the Enter key.

The website displays in the list below. You can remove it at any time by selecting it from the list and clicking the Remove Website.

  1. Select the Block new requests asking to access your camera checkbox if you do not want to give any other sites access to your camera.
  2. Click the Save Changes button.

Using Firefox’s Address Bar to Change Camera and Microphone Permissions for a Site

While accessing a site, you can also enable or block access with that site by using the icons in Firefox’s address bar.

To use Firefox’s address bar to change camera and microphone permissions for a site:

  1. Click the Show site information icon that displays in the address bar on the left.
  2. Any relevant permission statuses for the current site are displayed in the Permissions section.
  3. Do one of the following depending upon your current permission statuses:
    • Click the X next to “Allowed” or “Allowed Temporarily” to change the status to “Blocked” or “Blocked Temporarily” and block access to your device’s camera and microphone.
    • Click X next to “Blocked” or “Blocked Temporarily” to change the status to “Allowed” or “Allowed Temporarily” and enable access to your device’s camera and microphone.

You can also click the gear icon in the Permissions section to access the Preferences menu and change your camera and microphone permissions.

Using Your Android Device’s Settings Menu to Change Camera and Microphone Permissions

If you’ve turned off camera or microphone access, you can turn on those permissions by accessing your device Settings > Apps menu. From there you can enable the camera and microphone permissions from the Permissions submenu for the Firefox app.

Using Your iOS Device’s Settings Menu to Change Camera and Microphone Permissions

If you’ve turned off camera or microphone access, you can turn on your microphone or camera permissions by accessing the device’s Settings > Privacy menu.
