I am trying to setup support for Thunderbird Autoconfiguration, to make it easier for people to configure the software.

I have read the documentation that I can find, Thunderbird makes a ton of requests to different URLs. I've tried to make it happy buy having as many of the different URL's it is contacting return the info.

https://autoconfig.example.com/mail/config-v1.1.xml?emailaddress=user%40example.com

I can see both from the website & the developer tools, it is getting the config file back. No error in the client, other than to say 'Thunderbird failed to find the settings for your email account'.

My question is, how can I debug the issue? It is clearly getting the config file back, but there must be an issue with the config file that is preventing it from using the data in the file.

This is to re-open thread 1296678.

I too have this problem, I suspect a failure mode and I have a work-around.

I'm now on TB 91.8.1 build 20220413002405 but this has been going on for at least 4 years - I reported it (here, I think) some years back but no one did a fix so I built the work-around.

For context purposes I now have over 4G of mailboxes going back to at least 1993 so not easy to do housekeeping. I started using TB in approx 2011 and imported the old mail from my Eudora installation at that time, meaning 8 years of use before the problem started. I also used Thunderpunger before the author ended support(and it doesn't work now) and I have noticed some odd artefacts coming from its use, primarily whole (very old) mail boxes suddenly appearing as "new". The mail boxes are nested to at least 8 deep in some places. I also have about 40 active filters. The installation is still using POP3 and fetches mail every 5 mins. The filters were all set to run on fetching new mail and essentially file the messages in different places. The point is that it is a substantial chunk of files. Nice and efficient (not) but its what I use.

The filters started failing in approx 2019 in that on a mail fetch an error message saying "unable to access mailbox blah" would appear. This appeared to be worst at system start-up when the overnight mail was streamed in. This was a pain because you have to click "ok" each time the warning box popped up. I also noticed that when the filters ran successfully they all worked ok. At first this seemed to always be certain mail boxes but there were no problems with the file system. In fact I followed the suggested remedies when I posted the thread in the support forum without improvement. I also attempted deleting the mailboxes and making new ones elsewhere in the mail system and thus in the file system but the problem persisted. It looks like TB is running out of resources during the pass on "run filters when fetching new mail" when this runs the first time on boot, but not subsequently.

The work around was to switch off all the flags saying "run on fetching new mail" and instead "run [on inbox] every 10 minutes". The problem is now completely absent.

Over to you guys

I have my University of FLorida (UF) email downloaded in thunderbird. It is IMAP so whenever i delete something on the UF website it then deletes in Thunderbird and vice-versa. I am now experiencing for the first time in years a few emails missing in Thunderbird, but that are in the UF website. See for example the email below from PC-Progress I received yesterday (5/16th) at 10:28 am. It shows on the website under imbox, but not in Thunderbird. When in Thunderbird I put the PC-progress email in the search box it founds the email (see screenshot below), but when I click on it it goes to the conversation and the email is not there. Any suggestion?

Hello,

I encounter an error when sending a message with an on-premises exchange server. With Windows, an error window appears and is automatically closed. On Linux, the window remains displayed, which is problematic. In both cases, the message is sent and copied to the sent messages folder The windows error message says "copy to sent folder error" (obviously wrong) In console the error raised after QUIT command of mailnews.smtp with the error code 2152398868.

the error was reported by several of our users and I was able to reproduce it.

Hi,

I have several email accounts in Thunderbird (91.8.1 (64-bit), but for some reason there are always issues with my mail.com [not gmail] account. Emails have been ending up in people's Spam folders, and often when I try to send an email I get the following error message in Thunderbird: ______________________________________________

Sending of the message failed. An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: Requested action not taken: mailbox unavailable Failure sending mail. Try again later. Please check the message recipient "[email@address.example]" and try again ______________________________________________

This happens at random, with different recipients - when I send the same email from my account via the mail.com website, this does not happen, so it must be a Thunderbird issue? Please help!

Thunderbird asked to compact folders saying it would save hundreds of MBs of disk space, I accidently clicked "compact now" instead of just ignoring it as I usually do. As a result, Thunderbird deleted all mail on my Inbox folder - after restarting Thunderbird, my inbox was empty, I also checked the mail folder on my file explorer and the "Inbox" file (no extension) was just a few KBs, whereas previously to Thunderbird deleting it was several MBs. There were no errors reported during the "compact" process.

I don't think I can recover the mail that Thunderbird deleted because the mail server does not seem to keep mail older than 12 months. One of the reasons I used Thunderbird was to be able to keep a local copy of older emails.

The pop-up I received was the one shown in this article by Mozilla: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/compacting-folders

The article explicitly says "compact" does not delete mail, but then explains that it actually does (by not moving mail "moved or marked as deleted" to the a new file, and deleting the old file). I had no such "marked as deleted" mail. It was just plain read mail on my Inbox folder.

This is an Office 365 POP account. Thunderbird's retention policy for the Inbox folder was to use my (Thunderbird) account's policy, which was to never delete any mail. Alas, when I hit "compact now", Thunderbird deleted all my mail. I was running Thunderbird 91.6.1 on Windows 10.

I tried making a backup of all Thunderbird related folders and deleting the "popstate" file to download all mail from the server again. Mail got downloaded, but not all - as I mentioned, the mail server only returns 12 month worth of email, whereas I had years of mail stored locally. I don't see any way of recovering it... Why would Thunderbird just delete all mail calling it "compact"? Makes no sense...

While browsing e-mails, e-mails open and when the e-mail has no photo attachments, the program behaves normally, the messages are loaded quickly. When the message includes attachments in the form of photos, various jpg, png formats, the program hangs for a moment, about 10 - 25 seconds, it happens only in the case of e-mails containing photos. I have 4 computers with the same configurations, with the same program, the same configuration, the same windows 10, the settings are the same on all computers, the same account type (POP3), the same e-mail end, and stranger the problem occurs on 2 computers and on the other 2 no, on the other 2 they have the same email with the photo message, the email is loaded very quickly, on the other 2 you have to wait as I wrote above until they are buffered, and the other 2 computers open the message preview in the same way, I couldn't find anything about it in the help, please help.

Hi all, I have two Gmail accounts, one private and one organizational, each one with its own unique problem. I access both accounts through Thunderbird for Windows, the Gmail Android app, and Chrome on my laptop. I use POP to be able to access the emails even when offline and store them in subfolders. I have learned that if I keep the messages marked as unread on the phone and Chrome, TB will download the messages.

1) My private Gmail account downloads only 4-5 messages at a time, and I have to manually hit: "get messages" many times until it downloads all the messages. Very annoying.

2) My organizational Gmail account through the university worked fine and downloaded as many new messages as were on the server. Until May 9th, when it stopped connecting with the Gmail server. It keeps asking me to re-enter the username and password (which it had saved, and hadn't changed), only to claim that Gmail is not accepting cookies. Needless to say that I haven't changed any of my cookies preferences neither on TB (which accepts all cookies) nor on Chrome (which blocked 3rd party cookies, but had an exception for the University's servers). I tried enabling any type of cookie in the account on Chrome, but that didn't help. I tried changing the authentication from password to OAuth2, and it didn't help.

I would appreciate your help. Shahar

I would need detailed steps, as I am not anything but a general user. Thanks.

I've been using Thunderbird for almost 2-3 years and lately, I was connected to a limited internet connection and noticed that Thunderbird is consuming more than 25GB per day on average. Although my emails are not changing that frequent but it keeps on consuming a lot of traffic.

I'm using configuration for Exchange mail server and synching the mail every 1 minute. The size of the offline messages is 3.5 GB

How can I stop this consumption? Or at least to understand why is this happening?
