If I receive an Excel spreadsheet (either .xls or .xlsx) or a Word document (.docx) as an attachment in Thunderbird it will only open in Read Only mode. I can save it & then open and it is fine but I cannot simply open the attachment directly without it being in Read only mode. I cannot uncheck the Properties "Read Only" check box because it is greyed out.

[Later note added: Similar problem applies to jpegs where you can't rotate the opened attachment (ie this is a kind of non-editing mode too)]

The yellow "Warning" bar that permitted editing is no longer appearing.

Something seems to be preventing this yellow bar showing & that is why I cannot "give permission to edit". Is this a config issue ?

This problem does not occur if opening from webmail or Windows Live Mail, only on Thunderbird.

Same issue on Windows 7 (yes I know it is not supported) and Windows 10. I have Thunderbird 91.9.0 (release update channel) on both.

I have several email accounts and the issue occurs with any email account and whether POP3 or IMAP. Also with Word/Excel attachments to emails stored in Local Folders which used to open fine.

It is kind of like Thunderbird is trying to force me to save the file rather than open.

This problem has only arisen following latest update (91.9.0).

I have tried opening in Troubleshoot (Safe) Mode with add-ons disabled and the problem still exists.

Can anyone tell me what to do about this please ? How can I make Thunderbird allow direct opening of an attachment in normal editing mode as it used to do ? How do I get the yellow warning bar back please ?

What, if anything, do I change in config editor to make the yellow bar reappear ?

Thanks for any help.

Every few minutes when it automatically checks if I've got incoming email, Thunderbird (78.13.0) pops up a window that says:

Unsent Messages X ? Do you want to send your unsent messages now? □ Always ask me when I go online [Send Now] [Later]

I don't remember what these unsent messages were, and do not want to send them until I see them and perhaps decide to delete them instead of sending. I understand that unsent messages are "supposed to be" in the Outbox, but my Outbox is empty! I keep getting this annoying pop-up that doesn't tell me where these messages are or allow me to access them. Where are they? How can I access them? Thank you. (P.S. Please don't tell me to upgrade to a more recent version of Thunderbird. That's not the problem!)

I don't understand the article about "Automatic Conversion of Google mail accounts to Oauth2 authentication.

As a gmail POP3 email account user does this mean if I am on Thunderbird 91.8 (or 91.9) I need do nothing about getting an App password from Gmail and when Google forces 2SV upon me Thunderbird will automatically cope with this ? We were told gmail/Google would not accept/allow/permit Oauth2 authentication for POP3 (and therefore we would have to use an App password). Has Thunderbird found a way to deal with this ?

If not and I have to have an App password, can I just edit passwords in Saved Passwords (Password Manager) to insert the App password instead - and will this automatically then be saved; or do I have to delete the passwords, then go through the Get New Mail (and subsequently the Write & Send) to insert the App password and remember to check "save it in passwords" or "use password manager" to get it into the Saved Passwords ? (I get conflicting answers when I search for advice)

Thank you

The image which may be attached belongs to a different question "Thunderbird & icons" but I have been unable to to delete it from here.

Hello,

I tried to find the answer, but could only find info regarding IMAP, and not about POP3.

At the moment I have my home computer configured to use POP3 and leave a copy of the emails on the server, so I can also access them from my phone, which is configured to use IMAP. Thunderbird on my home computer is configured to delete mails on the server when I delete them in Thunderbird, this works properly.

To reduce the size of my inbox I moved, by drag-and-drop, E-mails from my inbox to folders which I created under "local folders" and as they disappears from my "local" inbox I was under the impression they where also removed from the server. Now I found out that all these mails are still visible when I use Webmail, so they are not deleted from the server at all, just not visible in my inbox in Thunderbird. Is there a way to configure Thunderbird, with POP3, to have mails deleted from the server once I move them to local folders?

From what I read so far, "archive" and local folders is more or less the same, only "archive" can be automated and moving them to local folders I have to do manual. Is this correct?

During my search I also found out that when using IMAP it`s also possible to "Keep messages for this account on this computer", so to have them available offline as well. If above option with POP3 (to have them delete from the server once moved to a local folder) is not possible, I might change to IMAP completely. In that way when I move messages to local folders they will for sure be removed from the server. The reason I never changed to IMAP was that I wanted to have local copies of my E-mails and could back-up them. But now I read, and think, this will also be possible with IMAP and "keep messages on this computer"

Best regards, Jasper

Using Thunderbird 91.4.1 (64-bit)

Hi. Last two days, T-bird has taken to showing the wrong sender's address - but only sometimes, which makes it odder. For example 3 e-mails from Union Local de Montpellier are listed as coming from Language Log: the first is a trade union organisation telling me about demonstartion for higher wages and union training, while the latter is an academic website for linguisticians. Strangely enough, I am on the mailing list for both.

One example attached. (Note: Language Log is a US site, that operates on Wordpress. If you can help I would be very grateful.

Thanks, adj

I think my question sums it up. I have two active personal accounts, and one that's been inactive for two years: my former business email account. Each time I boot Thunderbird I get an error message saying that I can't log into the account (I broke the vital forwarding link that used to point to my local server), and I'd like to eliminate the need to close the two error windows that always pop up. But I'm afraid that if I delete the account or change something in its "Settings" that I'll lose my 10 years of collected and sorted emails.

I am having difficult connecting to mailboxes in Plesk Obsidian on a VPS. I can set up the mailboxes in Plesk and make a note of the password. I then go into TB and start the 'Add Mail Account' process. All goes well at first. I get a green message saying 'Configuration found by trying common server names' (automatic connection). When I click 'Done' TB whirrs for a bit and then comes back with a green message showing a tick and 'Checking Password' but an orange message saying 'Unable to log in at server. Probably wrong configuration, username or password'. If I try manual configuration I get a similar sequence (using ports 995 and 465, SSL/TLS and 'Normal password').

I do not have this problem when working with cPanel (on a different server, but very similar mailboxes and security settings). This suggests to me that there's something amiss in my Plesk settings, but what could it be?

I have searched around without success. Most articles that might help are for TB 31 (even the Plesk Obsidian on-line manual). Any suggestions, please?

When I reply to an e-mail using Thunderbird, quoted text appears (in Thunderbird) with a quote bar on the left as expected.

However, when the recipient gets the message in Outlook or GMail, the quote bars are missing. In GMail quoted text is indented and a slightly different color (though it's hard to see the difference). In Outlook the quoted text is just indented.

How do I get Thunderbird to include quote bars for quoted text in the sent message?

If I format the message (with quote bars) using markdown in a browser, and then cut/paste the formatted message into Thunderbird, then it appears as expected to recipients using Outlook and GMail. But that's a painful way to compose replies to Outlook and GMail users (IOW everybody I reply to).

I'm running 91.7.0 on Linux. Desktop new mail notifications always disappear after 5 seconds — regardless of the duration configured in TBird.

I've tested the desktop notification system with other applications, and desktop notification duration is working fine. It appears that Thunderbird is ignoring my configured notification duration and is either

  1. Always sending a value of 5s no matter what I configure.
  2. Not sending a duration to the desktop notification system at all (the default duration is 5s).

Again, other applications besides TBird don't have this problem: user configured notification durations work fine.

I would be grateful if there is an answer to exporting the Thunderbird address book not in the .csv format into my Win 10 downloads file. I have had a new PC and had a nightmare sorting out my address book. A CSV app restored them but all over the place and have spent hours sorting the name and email addresses. I have tried copy and paste, no luck. Tried all the five 'save as types' but again no real success. I want save them in a simpler fashion. The CS Charset, CS UTF-8, Tab D Charset,Tab UTF-8, V card and LDIF all failed Many thanks Kind regards Alan Jones

In the email client I have just come from the Unread folder contains all unread messages irrespective of the folder they might be in. The Unread filter in Thunderbird appears to relate only to the highlighted folder. I have many folders, the list being long not all are visible on the 'home' view. This means that messages in folders far down the list are only visible if I scroll down looking for them. Is there a way to modify the Unread filter to ensure that all folders are searched for unread messages and displayed together? I am using TB 91.8.1.
