Thunderbird 102.7.0, 64-bit, Windows 10.

I just fell over this today but it may have been around for a while.

I have lots of email accounts. It was great when TB starting properly supporting a per-account (outbound) SMTP server, however, this seems to have newly broken. I fell over it today, but I don't reboot things for ages so I cannot pinpoint the start.

Here's the issue.

I have accounts on many mail servers, many on the same (mainly att.net, and gmail.com, as it happens).

Each one of them, to send mail, wants me to log in with an individual sending address. Fair enough. This used to work just fine.

However, suddenly, just the att.net addresses are broken. What *seems* to be happening is that the same, single login address is being used for all N accounts. Naturally, this breaks when the login address doesn't match the one on the From: line. So I have to futz around, fiddle around, and so on, and then things work. (I.E. I change the TB settings so that the outbound SMTP auth login matches the From: line, have to re-enter the password, and only then will the message be sent.) So if I have two accounts, x@att.net and y@att.net, only one of them (at a time) "works" with att.net - it's whatever I successfully used last. If I sent mail from x@, this address is being used (and it's in the account settings field. over-riding what was there before), even if I send mail from y@. Or z@. Etc. If I change the SMTP auth address to y@, then that account works perfectly, but x@ doesn't. And so on.

Now the weird part is this: my Gmail addresses still work perfectly. I can send from all of them without changing a thing.

The only thing I can see is that Gmail is set up to use oAuth, and att.net is set up to use 'normal password' (via SSL, so I'm not that bothered about security).

Did I unknowingly manage to break something? Is there a new tweak? Help!

Memory leak / TB not responding on latest two versions after reading S/MIME signed email with links

Just this week I started having problems where Thunderbird hangs, apparently due to a memory leak, after viewing S/MIME signed emails containng embedded hyperlinks to a secure site that requires my certificate to login. This is on a Dell Precision 7550 running Windows 10, and Thunderbird 91.9.0 (also the previous installed version - I believe it was 91.8.1).

After clicking on such an email (which come from a known address and are forwarded to a specific folder by a rule), the email is slow or fails to load into the display window. Subsequent clicking on other folders has a delayed response or never responds. I sometimes get a message at the top saying (Not Responding), sometimes I can click on other email records or switch folders, but emails no longer display contents in the viewing pane - it stays blank.

The other think I noticed is the blue bar at the lower right which appears when compacting shows up with the bar at 100% but never goes away. To end the task I must use Task Manager. This behavior only occurs after I have clicked on signed email with links (but not the link itself) that require a login using the smartcard certificates. Prior to looking at the signed email with these links, TB operates normally (aside from the endemic new user interface issues) when viewing other signed or unsigned emails. Curiously, in my most recent restart of the program, I clicked on several messages from the source of the emails with the hyperlinks, but ones that did not link to the secure files requiring certificate access. One of these was encrypted and opened normally with my certificate, and after accessing this email, the emails with the secure hyperlink opened normally and did not result in TB not responding.

I believe this has something to do with TB and S/MIME configuration, and have verified this behavior does not occur in Troubleshooting mode. However, in Troubleshooting mode, I cannot access my PKI S/MIME certificates as the Broadcom smart card device is not present. I am attaching a task manager snip showing the memory leak (the memory used continues to increase with time, the CPU percentage stays roughly the same - unfortunately this file upload has a perpetually spinning circle and still says it is uploading, so I may have to try again). I have also included the Device Manager view associated with the S/MIME certificates in regular and troubleshooting mode which show the internal Broadcom device is not present in the latter instance. I need to have the functionality and security provided by the smartcard S/MIME certificates, so this is a major problem for me.

Hi,

I use a siteground server and whenever I add a new account, TB recognizes the settings but when I click "Next" to finalize the process, it never completes.

If I try to configure it manually, I get an error saying "incoming server already exists."

To fix the problem, I have to exit TB and manually edit the profile file.

I end up adding:

user_pref("mail.account.accountXX.identities", "idXX"); user_pref("mail.account.accountXX.server", "serverXX");

Then I make a copy of another account's

user_pref("mail.identity.idXX.XXX"

settings and make them fit the new account.

As you can guess, it's pretty tedious and annoying but I don't understand why this happens.

Any ideas?

Hello, I have seen similar reports on that issue here and elsewhere. What surprises me is that if I right click on the sent folder and select properties, it still gives me the right number of messages in that folder.

In fact, If I go to ~/.thunderbird/my_profile.default/Mail/pop.gmail-2.com/Sent.sbd/2023 and open that file with whatever text editor, file 2023 contains all messages sent. I have tried repairing that file, then restarting TB to no avail. Is there a workaround ?

Ok, so obvious question: is this a reasonable, perhaps predictable, reaction to this file, or is there an unlikely escape of something no one wants?

Mon, Jan 23, 2023 (01:32pm EST)

Ok Guys,

I know you are all very busy, but how long should it take to perfect the "ADD NEW EMAIL ACCOUNT" option in Thunderbird.

I have always had problems (from years ago) adding new Email Accounts, I've learned to manually change the username to reflect, the full email address not just the name, (left of the @ symbol.)

Solution - include the full name ex: "Name@Domain" rather than Name, it would be such a great advancement.

Secondly,

Now on this latest release of Thunderbird (102.7l.00) and a little prior

I have been running into this Strange problem

Every time I add a New Email Account, and click on Done, It spins, and spins, while I wait for TB to add the New Email. and apparently, it never does.

Same problems as before: the Username is incomplete, which is a pain I manually have to configure it and I re submit the Task, and it comes back " Incoming Server Exists Message" Error Message

After maybe 10 years of developing Thunderbird, I cannot understand why this basic of all basic procedure is flawed.

FYI - I have spent the past 1 hour trying to add an email account - and it will not work.

You have any solutions?

Thank you in advance.

I lost power to my PC when Thunderbird was running (thanks electrician who tripped the whole fusebox!). Since then despite everything I have tried Thunderbird will not open my mailbox. I get the screen 'Set Up Your Existing Email Address' shown in the screenshot. I can see my address book.

I have tried creating a new profile, copying across all the data from the profile in use until yesterday and changing the profiles.ini to point to the new profile. If I start using the profile manager (thunderbird -p) it shows the new profile but if I click it then I still get the same screen shown in the screenshot.

After looking at other support pages I tried deleting the .lock files and rebooting, still the same.

Under the troubleshooting information I can see the correct profile folder and open it, if I click about::profiles then the correct profile is in use.

It is a bit more complicated as I had the profile on a NAS drive but I have created a new profile on the PC and copied all the data in the profile directory to the local profile folder. Still the same results.

Edited: After trying a couple of other things - import into a new profile from the currant one, still same results, and changing the installs.ini file to match the profiles.ini one, also same results, I have uploaded a couple more pictures after looking again at other support questions.

I am on version 115.10.1 (32-bit)

Thanks for any help.

Hi,

I have a strange problem with Thunderbird (currently 91.8.1 on Linux, but have this problem for a while). Initially (i.e. after each reboot) Thunderbird works normally but at some point when I start Thunderbird all I can see in the folders list are one entry for each account (see attached screenshot). I can still edit account details. But the only way to make it work again is to reboot my system. Just logging out and in is not sufficient. I tried to start Thunderbird in safe mote or to get some log details but nothing helped or got me a step further.

Today I experienced something new. I worked with Thunderbird and didn't close it (and also didn't suspend or hibernate the system). At some point when I wanted to visit the sent-item-folder I got an error message (unfortunately I didn't make a screenshot) that the folder couldn't be loaded. Then I couldn't open any folder. After restarting Thunderbird I had the problem of above.

Hope someone has an idea how to fix this.

I am using Thunderbird 115.10.1 on Windows 11. T keeps deleting my saved passwords. T takes a very long time to load. There are no saved passwords and I enter them all with the options to save. I check the passwords in Settings and they are all there correctly. When I next run Thunderbird it may or may not have them still saved. I check the Settings and they have gone; so I enter them again and they are saved OK. But then they are deleted some time later. I cannot see any pattern in the failure. I wonder if there is a problem with the outgoing server setttings. All the passwords are lost whether imap, pop (Ionos), hotmail or yahoo. Is there a way to clear out my profile or is this a problem with this T release. it did not happen until about 1-2 months ago. My profile is on a local NAS. Generally T seems to be quite unstable ; I get Not Responding too often.. Thanks

We work with Thunderbird on local PC's but for roaming support we have the Thunderbird profiles on a network drive. Lately we noticed that on occasion the network drive is slow or disconnects for a second at which point Thunderbird looses it's lock or the connection to the profile. This results in then giving a popup to reenter the credentials for the mailbox. Is there some setting in Thunderbird where we can tell it to try again for a few times before giving the error?

I found the option 'network.protocol-handler.external.disks' but I cannot find any description on what this setting actually does, is this setting relevant to this issue?

I would appreciate any help you can give us.

Hi there,

I started out by syncing my email address into Thunderbird, and it worked well, until I decided to create a new alias for my original mailbox.org address. From that point onwards, I was then required every half hour or so to re-login to my original email address. This is very frustrating to have to do so. And this is despite the fact that on Thunderbird, it does correctly show my alias address (because i updated the 'account settings' relating to the original email address, so that it would reflect the new alias address - I.e. I changed the "account name" and "email address" to [insert alias email here]. )

What do i need to do to rectify this problem? I have gone over many FAQ's and can't seem to find the answer to this. Happy to provide more clarification if needed.

I updated Thunderbird from 91.13.1 to 102.6.1.

All Addons are disabled/uninstalled. iMAP account and SMTP.

Normal Mode: I can send and receive if I do not check "save password". If I do try and save pwd it takes a long time but finally does refresh iMAP folders. No pwds are listed in the pwd manager. If I try and send and save the pwd it waits a long time and fails to send (connection failure) If I try and send and enter pwd without saving it it works fine.

Troubleshooting (TS) mode: Works perfectly I enter the password for iMAP and for sending SMTP it sends and receives quickly and I can see the pwd listed in pwd manager.

Restarting TB in normal mode after Troubleshooting mode and pwd manager list is empty.

I tried copying logins.json after it had saved pwd in TS mode and replacing it after normal mode no luck.

I tried with firewall on/off and antivirus on/off
