I want to delete my emails locally, not necessarily from the server

Title. Thunderbird is a really cool client but it's pretty slow. I blame that on the thousands upon thousands of emails that my hotmail and gmail each hold. I don't necessarily want to delete these emails, but I have seldom a reason to have any email older than 2 months in my thunderbird client slowing and crashing the program whenever I want to combine inboxes.

To this end I went to "Synchronization & Storage" and told it to "Synchronize the most recent 2 months" but it didn't delete the huge cluster of older emails. The next option is to tell TB to delete these emails in the same menu but as I understand it that would also delete them in the server, which I don't want to do for posteriority.

What do I do?

Tunderbird makes no connection with any mail server. Does not ask for passwords, even when they were removed from store. Sending an e-mail results in: Verzenden van het bericht is mislukt. Er is een fout opgetreden bij het verzenden van e-mail: fout met uitgaande (SMTP-)server. De server antwoordde: Cannot connect to SMTP server 195.121.65.26 (195.121.65.26:587), connect error 10060. I set up a new computer, windows 11, and downloaded the latest version of Thunderbird. On the old computer the spam filter works normal, on the new computer Thunderbird puts a lot of normal mail in the spam folder. Is there a way to set the spam filter to not flag so many emails. I use gmail for my mail server. My iphone also uses the same gmail account and does not filter these messages

I have an AOL mail account, which I access using Thunderbird., and get 1000s of mostly promotional emails I want to delete. To mass-delete them, I use the following process: 1) sort by correspondent - this helps group the numerous promotional emails together as many are from the same senders; e.g: the 1,000 emails from ACME-JUNQUE will all be grouped together, followed by 500 from ACME-KUNQUE, followed by 900 from ACME-LUNQUE etc. 2) using the left-click then control-shift method I then highlight all or most of ACME-JUNK's emails and possibly also those of ACME-KUNQUE, depending how many I want to try to delete at once. 3) I then right-click and choose "delete selected messages". The actual deletion process that follows can take some time depending on how many emails I've selected to delete.

BUT - I then find that not all were deleted; I can see this easily when I look at the inbox counter. This seems to depend on the quantity. I can delete maybe up to a few hundred at once but beyond that they don't seem to get deleted. It's as if Thunderbird (or the AOL service) can only handle so many at once and the rest fall of the list. I will try to do some tests to quantify this - but I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this, and if so, is there a useful workaround? thank you

I have my Mac and thunderbird set to auto-update, so I am not sure where the culprit lies. But my system did a Mac update and a Thunderbird update both recently. I'm now on Sonoma 14.3.1 and Thunderbird 15.8.1. When I started thunderbird it spun for 10 minutes. I thought it was locked up initially, did it again and even tried starting in safe mode. But after about 10 minutes, it eventually stopped. Problem was all my calendars won't display. I can add or remove either. The interface is barely responsive, and it crashes after a few minutes. I started Thunderbird from the command line to see if I could monitor the errors. I get about 100 of the following:

Even if i close a conversation manually (by clucking on the triangle (>) i find open again after quitting and reopening TB

I would like to close all conversations and use as default keep conversations closed or show only last email of a conversation.

Hi Community, Please tell me how to switch on as default the Thunderbird delivery notification option. I have Thunderbird installed on two PCs. One has the option checked to always get a delivery status notification; i.e. always on by default. The other PC doesn't have this option checked for default and I have to remember to 'check' the option box each time I send an email. But I can't find where turn 'set' this option or change it!
