Cox Communications recently discontinued its e-mail services but provided a simple, direct transfer path to Yahoo Mail. The transfer retained the '@cox.net' referent in the e-mail address -- e.g., 'myusername@cox.net' -- to make the transition to Yahoo Mail seamless for all correspondence. The new Yahoo Mail username also now includes the '@cox.net' referent -- e.g., the former 'myusername' under Cox is now 'myusername@cox.net' under Yahoo. The transfer was successful, and e-mail send & receive functions for all of my old Cox accounts now work on the Yahoo Mail servers -- but ONLY in Yahoo's webmail.

in order to get Thunderbird to recognize my existing accounts under the new Yahoo regime, I went to 'Set Up Another Account > Email' and entered the required information, as illustrated in the attached screenshots. (See attachments 01 & 02.) The Set Up procedure initially found the old Cox server settings, apparently from Mozilla's archived data for the account. I Then performed a manual configuration, and, as indicated in the attached screenshots, the Set Up procedure also successfully found the new Yahoo Mail servers. Success, right?

Wrong! When I restarted Thunderbird, the new Yahoo Mail server settings were in place, but the username had not been updated -- it lacked the '@cox.net' suffix. After manually amending the username and again restarting, the new server settings and amended username were in place, but connection to the Yahoo servers failed repeatedly. (See attachment 03.) A second round of the 'Set Up Another Account > Email' procedure revealed that the archival Mozilla data had not been updated -- it still pointed to the old cox.net settings -- and a second manual configuration led to the same results as the first: Thunderbird failed to connect to my account on the Yahoo Mail servers.

I then looked for a way to completely remove the existing account from Thunderbird, and then to create a new account from scratch for the existing account on Yahoo Mail. I consulted Thunderbird online support advice [ref. 'Close My Account - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1395523 ]:

"If you created a mail account in Thunderbird for a particular email address to download emails from server then you can easily remove it ( Menu icon > Account Settings -- Select name of account in Left Pane -- Click on 'Account Actions' -- Select :'Remove Account'. -- Restart Thunderbird. ),"

However, I could find no 'Remove Account' selection anywhere in the version of Thunderbird that I am using (ver. 115.9.0 - 64-bit)!

Please explain what I must do:

   1. to make an existing Thunderbird account originally set up for an old '@cox.net' address hosted on Cox servers now connect to a new '@cox.net' address hosted on Yahoo Mail servers;

or, alternatively,

   2. to remove all traces of an existing Thunderbird account originally set up for an old '@cox.net' address once hosted on Cox servers, and then to set up a new Thunderbird account for the same '@cox.net' address now hosted on Yahoo Mail servers.

I have a friend who has been using the Outlook email client with her Gmail account. She's looking into moving to Thunderbird. Is it just a matter of... - making sure that IMAP is enabled in her Gmail account - installing Thunderbird - adding the Gmail account and credentials to Thunderbird

She's got lots of folders so is concerned that they won't be lost in the process.

Have been trying to upgrade for quite a while now but 68.12.1 is the last version that works. Any newer TB is mostly blank, settings can't be opened, the hamburger menu on the top right doesn't work. Account manager can be opened and shows accounts correctly.

Versions I tried: 78.5.1, 78.10.2, 91.7.0. None of them work.

Remedies I attempted to no avail:

  • Delete global-messages-db.sqlite
  • Create a new profile
  • Delete AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird completely (with backup)

I'm on Windows 10 (64bit 21H2). Downgrading to 68.12.1 restores full functionality.

My main motivation for upgrading is for a potential fix to the RSS address cannot be found bug.

Is there any chance I can get a newer version running?

I'm using TB 91.7.0 (64-bit) on Mint Linux. I somehow deleted a folder full of messages.

I do have a backup of the entire TB folder from few days ago, but can't figure out how to restore that folder back into the main TB universe.

Everything I have found says to use https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-CA/thunderbird/addon/importexporttools/ but that apparently has been corrupted as a protest by the author.

"Apparently the add-on has been corrupted by the author. "The site and all the extensions have been made unavailable as a form of protest against the illegal fascist measures and abuses against personal rights that have been occurring in Italy (the country where I live) since March 2020."

So, can someone tell me how to restore a folder of messages back into my T-bird successfully? Thanks everyone, Barry

Hello all,

I have several machines we use thunderbird and gmail connection on.

We can only get the accounts to link if the authorizations is set to "normal password"

From what I have read on the forum, we will need to change the authentication to oAuth2 for our accounts to work after May 30th.

Following the steps to do so, and authenticating (and allowing access) in the browser, I am unable to send/receive on the thunderbird side. Switch it back to normal password and it will again work properly.

Is there anything I missed here? Not understanding why we cannot get Oauth2 to work.

Current Settings

IMAP enabled in gmail Cookies allowed in thunderbird Less secure apps off in gmail (trying to get ahead of this before May) private/public windows defender firewall off

Thank you

I followed [guide] to move my Thunderbird profile from my old computer with Windows 10 to my new computer with Windows 11, but it is showing up as an empty window with no emails or folders/accounts. It also doesn't show my tabs/session. If I try to write a message, there is no "from" email address. I do get email notifications though, and I saw in Gmail that my forwarding filter worked as well. There is no error message or anything. I tried starting it in Troubleshoot Mode, but the same thing happens, except that the background color is different. I attached a screenshot of it in Troubleshoot Mode. Could this problem be due to Windows 11? Is there anything I can do to fix it?

Am having a strange issue with adding a GMAIL account.

I had some issues with my account, and removed all email accounts from thunderbird, and moved the profiles to a separate hard drive, in order to keep space on my normally used hard drive.

I go to add my GMAIL account, enter the password, etc, then click on "done" as all the details are pulling through

Then thunderbird opens a new window with gmail confirmation in it, but as soon as I click next/ok there, I get error 500, that's all we know.

I thought at first, it was a gmail error, but I can easily add gmail to outlook, so assume it's a error/old date in thunderbird that's causing the issue.

Any thoughts on the issue?

"500. That’s an error.

There was an error. Please try again later. That’s all we know."
