I am new to firefox, and not a developer. I have seen articles showing how to install a Language module (done, GB English), but when I right click in a text box all the advice says I should see a "Dictionary" sub menu, but I don't. Spellchecker works in Chrome and Safari, just not firefox. Any ideas...

I just upgraded to Monterey on my Mac running FF 101.0.1 (64-bit). I cannot add new search engines to my list of search engines. I'm trying to add DuckDuckGo without success. I have Google, Bing and Startpage. I click on Find More Search Engines, select and add DuckDuckGo but while it appears as an extension it does not appear in the list of search engines.

I have a user who runs SRS/Crystal Reports on their Windows 11 Lenovo laptop, but every time we go to the website where a Java-enabled pop-up window for viewing spreadsheets is supposed to load we keep getting a "A plugin is required to play this content" error message, but no option to install/approve the running of Javascript.

I have downloaded and installed the JRE and JDK on the endpoint device, but still no luck getting Firefox to load it. I am running the 32-bit version of the web browser, not 64-bit, so I am kind of stumped about how to proceed from here.

Is there a place I can manually download/install these Java plug-ins?

Thanks.

I have enabled the "Reduce motion" in macOS to limit animations when using app exposé or switching between desktops. Firefox seems to read this option from the OS and limit its animations, such as the loading animation shown next to a tab description when loading a window.

Is there an option to ignore the OS settings and enable all animations in Firefox?

Hiya,

I use a theme which some years ago (after a change in the way Firefox handles dark-mode preferences) changed all UI and websites to use dark-mode. I was able to keep using the theme, and mostly override this behavior by setting:

`layout.css.prefers-color-scheme.content-override = 1`

However, this didn't take for some components, such as the sidebar and bookmark editor window, which still continue to use dark-mode.

Is there any way to completely disable dark-mode everywhere, and still use my preferred theme?

Cheers, Afraz

I have followed the steps in the "Prevent Firefox from starting automatically" article: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-starts-automatically-when-i-restart-window

But Firefox keeps starting automatically when I restart my computer. Attached is an image of how the settings are now.

What should I do? This is a bit annoying. I don't use Firefox as my main browser but I work as a customer success manager for an online platform and always need to do some tests on Firefox, but I don't want it to start automatically when I turn on my computer.

I'll for instructions.

Thank you

I often need to be able to use the arrow keys to navigate my screen, especially in order to find and click on browser links. However, in the latest version of Firefox on a new macOS Ventura machine, the arrow keys are interpreted by Firefox even though they shouldn't be; at the least corresponding box in "Settings" is unchecked.

How can toggle this behavior off?

Thank you, David Romano

The excellent answer here no longer works in Firefox 117.0 on MacOS. Unfortunately, that post is archived, so I cannot post an updated solution there. I would greatly appreciate if a moderator could add this post in the linked article, or at least link from there over to here.

For Firefox 117, the code needs to be modified slightly (two lines at the top need to be removed): ```

  //
  function ConfigJS() { Services.obs.addObserver(this, 'chrome-document-global-created', false); }
  ConfigJS.prototype = {
   observe: function (aSubject) { aSubject.addEventListener('DOMContentLoaded', this, {once: true}); },
   handleEvent: function (aEvent) {
     let document = aEvent.originalTarget; let window = document.defaultView; let location = window.location;
     if (/^(chrome:(?!\/\/(global\/content\/commonDialog|browser\/content\/webext-panels)\.x?html)|about:(?!blank))/i.test(location.href)) {
       if (window._gBrowser) {
         let keys = ["key_find", "key_findAgain", "key_findPrevious", "key_gotoHistory", "addBookmarkAsKb", "bookmarkAllTabsKb", "showAllHistoryKb", "manBookmarkKb", "viewBookmarksToolbarKb", "key_savePage", "key_search", "key_search2", "focusURLBar", "focusURLBar2", "key_openDownloads", "openFileKb", "key_reload_skip_cache", "key_viewSource", "key_viewInfo", "key_privatebrowsing", "key_quitApplication", "context-bookmarklink"];
         for (var i=0; i < keys.length; i++) {
            let keyCommand = window.document.getElementById(keys[i]);
            if (keyCommand != undefined) {
               keyCommand.removeAttribute("command");
               keyCommand.removeAttribute("key");
               keyCommand.removeAttribute("modifiers");
               keyCommand.removeAttribute("oncommand");
               keyCommand.removeAttribute("data-l10n-id");
            }
         }
       }
     }
   }
  };
  if (!Services.appinfo.inSafeMode) { new ConfigJS(); }

Why is there not a simple means to take a link and pin it as a tile on my home page? I've expanded the number of rows displayed which as an odd history of my browsing, yet the latest links I've visited are not there - meaning the link to the location I would like to pin. Seriously, the entries in the rows (other than previously pinned links) is a hodgepodge. It might be useful if there was some evident logic to the items included. It is disappointing the number of times this question has been posed and the "answer" is to display more rows. Similarly disappointing - an old knowledge base article that says to click the 3 dot icon next to address bar for Firefox on android - would have been handy had such a control appeared in the latest version of Firefox I'm running on my Mac.

I'm using a video as the background for my website, and Firefox's built-in PIP (Picture-in-Picture) icon for videos is displaying. I don't want it to be visible on my website. I tried using FFmpeg, but it did not work as it was mentioned by some people on Stack Overflow. I read that Firefox won't display this icon for videos in an iframe, but I don't want to use an iframe on my website. Is there any other solution?

Is there a way to permanently disable red underlining from Firefox spell check? This has only started occurring since an update to Firefox 110 (now on 112), but there seems to be no way to make it go away. I've unchecked the spelling box in preferences, and killed off things in about:config:

extensions.spellcheck.inline.max-misspellings 0 layout.spellcheckDefault 0 services.sync.prefs.sync.layout.spellcheckDefault false services.sync.prefs.sync.spellchecker.dictionary false

I'm using Mac Monterey, and have the global spell check turned off for that. This seems to be a problem specific to Firefox, as it doesn't happen in Chrome (spellcheck off) or Safari. I'd like to remove this entirely, since it's distracting to have it second guessing me whenever I'm typing. The main reason I use Firefox is that it gives me the ability to control many things, particularly in combination with UBlock, but I'm unable to make any progress in removing this persistent work disruption.

I'm using macOS (Apple MacBook) where I'm running the latest stable version of Firefox: 112.0.

Based on https://support.mozilla.org/bm/questions/1344663 I have already enabled the preference accessibility.typeaheadfind.prefillwithselection = true

But this only copies the selected text to the Find bar when I press Cmd-F. It doesn't automatically search the text. I then have to press the Return key or press Cmd-G to make it search and find the nearest match (and also update the number of matches, and update the highlighted results if Highlight All is enabled).

How can I skip the extra step and make it also search the selected text which it has copied and pre-filled in the Find bar? Is there another preference to control that? Or should I open a bug report in Bugzilla?

Here are my current settings with the keyword 'find':

   accessibility.typeaheadfind	false
   accessibility.typeaheadfind.autostart	true
   accessibility.typeaheadfind.casesensitive	0
   accessibility.typeaheadfind.enablesound	true
   accessibility.typeaheadfind.flashBar	0
   accessibility.typeaheadfind.linksonly	false
   accessibility.typeaheadfind.manual	true
   accessibility.typeaheadfind.matchesCountLimit	1000
   accessibility.typeaheadfind.prefillwithselection	true
   accessibility.typeaheadfind.soundURL	beep
   accessibility.typeaheadfind.startlinksonly	false
   accessibility.typeaheadfind.timeout	5000
   browser.find.ignore_ruby_annotations	true
   findbar.entireword	false
   findbar.highlightAll	true
   findbar.iteratorTimeout	100
   findbar.matchdiacritics	0
   findbar.modalHighlight	false

   services.sync.prefs.sync.accessibility.typeaheadfind.linksonly	true
