When playing a video in background / different tab, the picture (screen) freezes after a few seconds, while sound still going on. It can be resolved by moving over the video picture with mouse cursor again, but it is nagging... Any idea what causes this? I noticed it in Youtube, but also Facebook videos...

A .mp4 video clip on the web will play through f/f but with no sound. A .mp3 audio clip plays ok. The laptop sound controls are not muted. The mp4 clip shows a bar at the bottom and on the right there's a symbol that looks like a speaker with a bar through it. There seems no way to change this. The mp4 clip will play perfectly in WMP and from the website on a Samsung phone.

Video seizes up after running for some time. Usually it will last for a half an hour to an hour, before freezing. The time to failure seems random. Occasionally, but rarely, the video will recover without sound. The only sure fix is to log out and restart the computer. It nearly, but not always, works the first time. My Acer has Windows 10 and is about 6-months old. I don't know if it's related, but the Bluetooth app is dropped occasionally. A reboot doesn't help, but it does sometimes recover after a few days, for no apparent reason.

Flash player is either screwed up or something else - or Firefox is blocking videos. Having experienced problems (videos just sit there or won't load at all) I've just uninstalled Flash Player and am attempting to reinstall a new version - but it won't let me. Seemingly there's another version being loaded - but no way can I find that or know what's happening, so I'm stuck.

The whole thing stems from my inability to watch any videos on Firefox - not even YouTube, BBCi LiveLeak clips or even porn. Yesterday everything went well but today I can't even see gifs on Imgur. What the hell is happening? Why is Firefox blocking me?

There have been other threads concerning this issue. Typically they blame the user for not having a cpu that is fast enough or not having the latest software, but it remains that Microsoft Chrome or Edge and others work properly, while Mozilla Firefox doesn't. FWIW, one of my computers, running Windows 7 works OK, but this one with Windows 10 doesn't

Not sure when it started, but for the past few months, any video I watch on youtube or netflix has a ludicrous amount of dropped frames (anywhere from 30-90% drop rate), and I have no clue how to fix it, the most common answers I've found are are things like toggling Hardware Acceleration or "media.mediasource.webm.enabled", empty the cache, check internet connection, and so on, but nothing's worked. But videos on Dailymotion play fine, and when I load youtube in Microsoft Edge, the video runs smoothly.

The following sites all have video playback issues for me: HBO Go, Netflix, Showtime Anytime, Hulu, Xfinity. - HBO freezes every for several seconds every 15 seconds or so. When it does this it repeats audio from the moment where it began freezing to where it stops freezing. Rinse and repeat. - Netflix, Showtime, and Hulu flicker aggressively. The behavior is persistent and unwatchable. - Xfinity is laggy, as if it's playing only every second frame.

macOS 10.13.6, Firefox 63.

I have done the following troubleshooting:

Start in Safe Mode. Check Adobe for Flash for updates. Changed Flash's settings / disabled hardware acceleration Tried turning on and off Automatic Graphics Switching in macOS system preferences.

None of the above have any impact, no matter what I do I cannot watch any TV in Firefox. I have experienced this in 10.11 and 10.12 with earlier versions of Firefox as well, for the past few years I cannot watch any streaming media in Firefox, forcing me back to Chrome every time... (This includes two MacBooks, the current one being brand new.)

Disappointing to say the very least as FF does run super fast, but since it's useless for watching TV/movies in my browser I just stick with Chrome...

This may sound like word games, but I'm not trying to be funny, merely specific.

So I'm on a network with limited bandwidth. Therefore it's critical for me to understand what settings I can configure (if any) that will prevent the DOWNLOAD of video and/or large images from web sites.

For example, your basic site nowadays probably uses HTML5 and may use that vs. the old-style Flash plug-ins to embed video. And yep classic HTML links with references to image files for the images.

Back in the day you could configure a browser to ignore these references and then the browser would not even attempt to fetch the referenced image or video files. I've recently started using Firefox again, and I'm trying to learn how Firefox handles this in the HTML5 era (or rather what dumb users like me are supposed to do nowadays).

I'm noticing most of the help literature is regarding disabling settings of the auto-PLAY feature. However, due to my ignorance of modern Firefox, perhaps I'm reading it wrong, but most of it seems to involve disabling plug-ins that activate after the file is downloaded, not preventing the actual download. Similar to if I'm using Microsoft Word to view a DOCX file from a web site, uninstalling Word doesn't prevent the DOCX file from downloading. What I don't want to do is cheerfully disable the video playing while my browser still happily downloads the video in the background... because my main goal is not to avoid the annoyance of autoplay, but my goal is to conserve bandwidth on my connection.

FYI I'm using the latest version of Firefox Quantum on Manjaro Linux.

Thanks for advice anyone can provide in helping bring me into the "now" of modern Firefox, or who can point me to any further help articles or instructions to help educate me about this. If I'm over-reading and disabling auto-PLAY also inherently disables the downloading of the associated media, super, but that distinction is not obvious in any of the documentation I've seen so far.

Thanks!!

I've recently had to do a clean install of windows 10 and since then I cannot autoplay in youtube. I have unblocked adblocker, I've set autoplay to "on," I've downloaded and reinstalled firefox, installed flash again, but none of that seems to work. I'm having the same problem with South-Park Studios as well; there it simply just doesn't play anything even before my reinstall of windows. Both work in other browsers fine. Only Firefox doesn't work.
