We're a Windows 7 x86 shop and we're finally upgrading from Firefox 3.6. I just need a little help finalizing the customizations for our Firefox 22 install.

Our requests don't differ greatly from others (no automatic updates, no plugin checks, set default home page, no Firefox sync etc.) and all that seems to be working so far. I ran the install on a machine that did not have a previous version of Firefox and found it largely behaving the way I expected it to.

However two things stand out:

On initial launch I'm seeing a 'checking compatibility of addons' screen. It doesn't ask me to do anything and disappears after a few seconds, but this worries me that it *might* complain about a plugin a user installed when we go through the upgrade process.

 - Can this 'check' be avoided?
 - Is it really doing anything? (eg: checking for blacklisted addons/extensions? etc)
 - What's the worst that could happen here?

In the registry (HKLM\Software\Mozilla\Firefox\Extensions) I have two entries created by 2 other applications on the workstation each of which pointing to their respective extension/addon/plugin directory (e.g.: C:\Program Files\Application\some_directory). When properly installed, one is listed as an Extension, the other a Plugin. On the first launch after installation, I see two 'Install Add-on' tabs prompting me to approve each the installation. Seeing as these extensions are allowed/trusted and required, I want Firefox to accept them without prompting the user. Now, I'm aware of two key elements that largely govern this (and their subtle differences) but I can't seem to get this to work right: extensions.autoDisableScopes extensions.enabledScopes With the former set to 0 and the latter 15 I relaunch FF and while I don't get the tabs, when I go to test them, it doesn't work. Furthermore, the Plugin is listed under Extensions which probably shoud not be.

 - What am I doing wrong?
 - How can I allow/trust/whitelist or otherwise automatically approve the installation of either specific add-ons, or add-ons within a specific location?

Please, correct me if I'm doing something wrong, or if there's a better way (e.g.: GPO's) to apply global settings for all users. I'm hoping to avoid a solution that requires installing a third-party plug-in Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Viewing two tabs side-by-side can be very helpful, for example when copying information across. This used to work in older version using the AddOns tiled=tabs/pages. But in FF76 tiled-pages has very limited functionality and does not work for me for any page that requires javascript - so most pages requiring logins are out.

How can I get this very time-saving functionality back?

I recently upgraded from WIndows XP to Windows 8. None of the installed browers would work with the FTP site www.wetransfer.com. I installed Firefox and it solved the problem. FF worked fine for a couple months. Now it is behaving exactly like the other browsers installed on my machine. I do not know if there was a windows update or FF update that changed some kind of setting. I uninstalled and reinstalled FF to no relief. I did try to restore my computer to an earlier date but ...1. the dates available don't go back far enough and 2. for some reason the restore fails. Don't know what to try next. Wetransfer only suggests try a different browser ... ie, aol, yahoo, google chrome do not act any differently on this machine. Don't know what to do next.

We need to access a web site of the European Medicines Agency where graphs are only visible if the Adobe Flash Player is running. This is no longer possible with FireFox 64 bits ... which forces us to use Edge (which we do not like)... Since EMA may take a lot of time to convert its web sites for using HTML 5 and stop using Adobe Flash Player, we do need an alternative for FireFox ... Is there any that Mozilla would recommend ?

Mozilla Plug-in page showed Java was outdated and needed updating. I did do that but the plug-in page still shows Java Deployment Toolkit 7.0.90.5 10.9.2.5 & Java (TM) Platform SE 7U9 10.9.25 as being outdated. But when I go to my add-on page and check my plug-ins, those are both showing up as being installed and enabled and the date I updated them on which was today 12/12/12. Also I went to www.java.com to check what the latest version was and when you click on downloads it automatically checks to see if you are running the current version and it says I am running the latest version. I even went and uninstalled some old java updates that I forgot to remove in my programs. Should I just ignore the *outdated* plug-in reminders for those two on Mozilla's plug-in page since everything else is telling me I did it correctly? Thing is, how do I know when there is a new update if those two never update and consistently show they are outdated? Thanks to anyone that may be able to answer this question.

How do I set downloads to automatically save instead of prompting me to open them?

I recently reset Firefox. Before whenever I downloaded a file, it automatically prompted me if I wanted to open the file or save it to my computer, with saving it to my computer preselected. This was fine because I almost never want to open these downloads automatically, and I like all my downloads to go into my downloads folder on a separate drive with much more space (not the temp folder on C:\). The option "do this automatically for files like this from now on" was useful for the rare file type that I would want to open automatically (usually because it's a very small music file or something).

Now every time I download virtually any file type, the prompt comes up with 'open the file' preselected, and "do this automatically for files like this from now on" greyed out. As a result, on more than one occasion, I have mistakenly clicked ok and opened huge files automatically after downloading (which has resulted in them popping open even hours later and playing automatically once the download finished). I'd like to be able to select "save it to my computer" and have it do this automatically, but that option is greyed out.

The help available seems to suggest going into options>Applications and changing the action for the appropriate content type, but: (a) not all the content types I download are listed, i.e. .mov, .mpeg, .rar, etc. (b) changing the action for the content types I do have (.wmv and compressed/zipped folder only) has done absolutely nothing.

I'm still prompted for each and every file I download, still preselected to open the file, with the "do this automatically for files like this from now on" still greyed out.

I'd like to change it to the way I had before, or at the very least automatically set all downloads to save into my downloads folder.

I received some good suggestions about how to shut down without losing whatever was on the main window, when I didn't know another window had opened. Use Ctrl-Shft-Q.

But I so use X without thinking, that I have lost another load of tabs (that I reconstructed partially--they don't all show up in history unless every one has been opened in the last session, something I never, ever do) by using the wrong means to shut down FireFox.

Isn't this something FF should address? I can't be the only person losing 30+ tabs and unable to get them back bbc they weren't actually opened, but merely sitting on the Tab Row, so not in History.

This for me is gigantic. And reminding myself to use Ctrl-Shft-Q really is a lot to expect when every other program and app closes reliably with X.

Thanks.

This isn't as much of a support question as a design decision question. I know that WebM is to remain open, and h.264 isn't sure, but from what I can tell from these results:

http://www.streamingmedia.com/Articles/ReadArticle.aspx?ArticleID=68594&PageNum=1

The CPU usage difference is immense, which honestly is an issue for a lot of PC's. h.264 is way lower on CPU usage, and seems to be superior overall. Are there any plans/talks to move that to being an open standard, and will Firefox ever support it?

I understand Firefox is an open source browser, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't support some standards if they are as dramatically superior as this, even if it wont always remain open, drop it at that time instead of just not picking it up.
