Long time user (15-20 yrs?), I have been avoiding the "next" upgrade for several years for various reasons (hate change, fave add-ons go away, hate change, not broke-don't fix, hate change...). But I am now running into a few websites that won't permit this browser, so it may be time to move on. With heavy adblocking and tracker-blocking and my benign web browsing habits, I've not been concerned about security (never had a virus in 20 years - knock wood). It's just full functionality and slowness at this point. At this point, I see even my Classic Theme Restorer is no longer available, so I'll just have to bite the bullet on aesthetics and deal with a modern browser. However, a couple of things are unclear:

1. does 20 years of bookmark history (and remembered history) affect memory footprint. I only refer to existing bookmarks occasionally these days and may consider a full purge. Partial purge would probably be too time-consuming. Maybe even a full profile purge might be worthwhile for a true clean slate. Maybe FF has come a long way and old extensions and settings won't be necessary. I also have several about: settings that I may (or may not?) miss.

2. Are automatic updates unavoidable in newer versions? I read about "manual" but it sounded temporary.

3. The permissions on many potential add-ons I've looked at are quite unnerving... e.g many of them require full access to ALL my data (usernames and passwords!!!) and I know the function has no need for such. Who has time to investigate these fully for safety? Is there any anti-malware vetting required for add-ons to be available?

4. I know newer is generally faster, but FF has a history of growing and slowing down after upgrades. My hardware isn't getting any newer (although its more than ample for my current needs), but software tends to be developed on latest and greatest hardware. How does latest FF compare to circa V41 in memory usage?

In any case, I thought I would give the latest vesion a whirl on my old Vista laptop (which is currently at V43) and check it out before plunging in on my W7 work PC or home PC. Any answers or insight into such a big jump are much appreciated.

Classic theme restorer is supposed to work for versions up to mine but it is disabled all of a sudden. I am not updating this version because I want the version , look and feel as it was. So according to the add on it should still be working on version 41 that I am using. However at some point last week it suddenly popped up as disabled and says it will not work with this version although the add on says it should. I am not looking for comments about how I should up date to the latest and greatest crap that Mozilla is putting out, I know all that and do not need the reminders. As far as that goes I do not know why I use a product from such an intolerant bunch of whiners any way.

About a month and a half ago MP4 videos in Twitter 29 played fine. Then I updated to the latest version of Adobe Flash player on both my Win 8.1 and old XP computers. That is when I started getting "This browser does not support video playback" error when trying to play a mp4 video in Twitter. I ran Firefox in Safemode ... no change. I removed all addons ... no change. All Plugins are Ask to Activate or Always Activated. I uninstalled Firefox and Flash player and reinstalled .. no change. The videos work fine in MS IE II and Chrome 53.0.2785.116 m. H264 Codec is installed. YouTube videos play fine.

A big reason why I didn't leave firefox years ago when everybody was going Chrome was because of the search box (https://support.cdn.mozilla.net/media/uploads/images/2014-05-22-11-30-43-51990a.png). I have more than a dozen sites there that I got from Mycroft and I use it anywhere from looking something up on ebay to search for subtitles. I usually do it in conjunction with the context menu (selected text, right click and search used to lookup the word using the active engine in the search box, which I changed depending on what I wanted to look for). Now I see that changing engines in the searchbox just takes me to the site in question, it doesn't seem to change the "active" search engine in the search box. Is this how it's supposed to work? If it is then _what_ is the purpose of having the search box there?

To be clear, I already found an addon that adds a context search menu that is quite useful but this post is to find out what the search box is supposed to accomplish in firefox now and if it can be customized to behave the way it did before.

I don't think you have respect for who uses Firefox. Do you understand how many of us work for home, and need this platform to work for our BUSINESS? I think you play games with users, at our expense.

So furious that I have to try to fix your problems when I have to get work done. Last night you gave me a message to try refreshing. You said everything would be saved.

I TRUSTED YOU. The layout on the page at the top was terrible, and I don't know where my addons went. It still looks unworkable. but at least my tabs were all there.

Today, you LOST ALL MY TABS except for the pinned ones. All windows gone, too. I copied over the places sqlt from my Desktop Old Firefox data to the new AppData Profile folder several times. Never worked. Ff just kept reverting to show me pinned tabs.

Really, you don't test these things first??? I want to completely erase this useless Refresh and go back to when things worked. XP.

Hello,

Please reference this support thread on SoundCloud's tech support forums. The thread contains all pertinent information, including videos of the problem and console screenshots made by myself and others. https://www.soundcloudcommunity.com/soundcloud/topics/skipping-to-the-middle-of-a-track-causes-stuttering-and-glitchy-audio-chrome-firefox

In a nutshell, when you try to skip forward during streaming audio, there is a buffering/stuttering issue that prevents proper playback of the track. This problem is confirmed on SoundCloud and Traxsource, and other people in the support thread have mentioned Mixcloud and other streaming sites. In other words, this is not the fault of one particular streaming service or another.

The problem does not occur in Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer, or Chrome. Well, to clarify, when the problem was posted on the SoundCloud support forums, Chrome was having the same issue. However, they did a version push a few days ago, which fixed it.

Here is my original post on SoundCloud support (minus erroneous information about Chrome), which has pertinent details. Note that we upgraded both Flash and Firefox recently, so although I mention previous versions in my original post, everyone involved has since updated their browsers and Flash.

As of now, the only fix for the issue is to roll back to Firefox 40.0.2. Thanks for any and all help =)

Matt

Original Message===========

Skipping to the middle of a track causes stuttering and glitchy audio (Firefox).

I am running Windows 10 Pro.

There seems to be a caching issue affecting playback - I started noticing this problem three or four days ago. Previously, I could skip through my stream at will, going straight to the middle of tracks or mixes to listen to a few seconds, and determine if I liked the track. Now, I cannot do that on Firefox 41.0.1. The problem is merely annoying on songs that are 3 or 4 minutes in length, as I must let them "cache" for perhaps ten seconds before skipping around. Unfortunately, the problem is a game-breaker on mixes that are, for example, 90 minutes long. If I skip to a point directly in the middle of the mix, nothing happens. The playback button alternates between the "Play" symbol, and the "Caching" symbol ("..."), and if audio does resume, it is glitchy and consists of different parts of the track being played back at once.

I've eliminated my internet connection as a source of the problem by loading up Edge. In Edge 20.10240.16384, the problem does not exist. I can scroll down to any 2-hour mix in my feed, click on the middle of it, and the audio starts right up. No caching, no stuttering or glitching.

I rolled back Flash to version 18 to see if it fixed the problem in Firefox, but it did not. The problem persisted, so I re-upgraded back to Flash 19.

I fully admit to my anxiety and issues surrounding change, but this colour is completely and utterly distracting at every given moment. I can't simply just make the tabs "read" - they're Cookie Clicker and the Kittens game! Every time I click on and leave the yellow comes back...

... please tell me there's an off switch somewhere. An addon that makes an off switch. Something.

I had not updated firefox, so the issue isn't with an update. It isn't a new addon, or apparently any of the addons, since I restarted without them and it stayed. I'm lost.
