Most of my work life is in email. Over 25 years (starting with Mulberry) I have built up a custom IMAP folder hierarchy that makes work manageable, but Thunderbird 115 has broken this, now displaying nested subfolders at the top level sorted alphabetically. See the images for before and after. For example, there are now three "Administrative" folders that were formerly classified under superordinate folders for my roles as lab leader, graduate program chair, and departmental faculty member. Persons who used to be in Colleagues or Students subfolders are now at top level. Inexplicably, a few folders retained their hierarchy but most are flattened out. Now I need to scroll through hundreds of folders (have not counted recently but in the late 2000's I had over 500.)

I was able to revert to 102.14 using backups, but will be stuck with this version for the rest of my career unless Thunderbird fixes these problems. Thunderbird is so important to me that I make an automated monthly donation to the project, but will have to cancel if this is not fixed.

If anyone has found a work around please LMK. And Thunderbird team, please acknowledge and LMK whether this will be addressed or are IMAP users left behind?

Thanks, Dan Suthers

Since installing Supernova, I find a huge (multiple minute) delay whenever I open a folder to a new tab or window. There was zero delay on the prior version to open a folder, so it appears to be specific to Supernova. I'm surprised that no one else has mentioned it on the forums yet, so it seems it might just be something about my particular setup. Can anyone help me diagnose what I might be doing wrong?

Thanks!

Mozilla has done it again. They seem to be on a mission to ruin their programs. I have already switched away from FireFox, and now I will have to switch away from Thunderbird if I can't downgrade.

I foolishly upgraded to 115.5.1. The new interface is more cluttered and takes up about 30% more space than the old interface. The bar at the top is wider, the bar between the email list and the email contents is wider. The side bar on the left which lists the folders is wider. And all this is happening even though I have "density" set to maximum. Furthermore, my favorite add-on is suddenly no longer working and I can't find a way to restart it.

What I need is this:

  • Please tell me which version prior to 115.5.1 is the most stable and doesn't have any of the interface changes that 115.5.1 has. (How do I find out the number of the last version I was using?)
  • Please give me detailed instructions on how to download such version and downgrade. I am NOT a computer person and I need clear instructions.

Thank you.

Thunderbird 115.2.3. Mac OS 10.15.7 on an older Mac mini. I use larger-sized fonts, so display real estate is limited.

I want to see the full headers, but I want them to scroll in a message header pane that I can resize (that is, I want to be able to move the horizontal line pointed to in the attached image to increase the message display area and decrease the header display area). Otherwise, it takes over my entire message space. Is there a way to do this (I haven't found it)?

I have used Thunderbird for years. I recently updated to version 115. I prefer the previous version. In 115, I cannot zoom a page simply with ctrl-+ without first going to the view menu. My two Outlook inboxes are sorted at the bottom of my list of favorites and they cannot be moved up with my other inboxes. I had no problems with the previous version. How can I get and reinstall that version?

I have been using Thunderbird like Forever. Just downloaded for my new computer (Windows 11). Version 115.3.2 I HATE this new format. I have read other complaints about this with the question How Can I Get The Old Format Back? That question is never answered. I want the main space back on the majority of the screen. Now the majority of the screen is taken up with a list of messages with only a small box on the right for the actual message. I Hate This. If I can't get back to the old format I will probably have to go to some other e-mail program, and my donations will go with me!!!

Thunderbird 115 forcefully migrated my older profile and did NOT leave a way to go back?

That is NOT the way to do this.

You need create a NEW profile for the NEW version and LEAVE THE OLD PROFILE ALONE!

You must also have an alert, and explain the process, transparently giving the owner of decades of e-mail the opportunity to safely upgrade AND have the opportunity migrate back if they so desire.

How DARE Mozilla treat users and their data so casually.

This is NOT the way to do this.

Currently FURIOUS that this trusted tool has left me NO way to downgrade back to 112 except to rebuild my profile (and all the various e-mail accounts) from fucking scratch.

How do I downgrade to an older version of Thunderbird on Rocky Linux (RHEL clone)?

For my last update (yum update -y) I got Thunderbird 115 which has lots of problems.

If I try “yum downgrade thunderbird”, I get the error: Last metadata expiration check: 3:43:41 ago on Tue 14 Nov 2023 04:57:52 PM EST. Package thunderbird of lowest version already installed, cannot downgrade it. Dependencies resolve

I downloaded: https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/102.9.1/linux-x86_64/en-US/thunderbird-102.9.1.tar.bz2 but when I unzip and click the thunderbird icon, Thunderbird doesn’t pick up my Thunderbird profile. I saw some windows downgrade tutorial that said to delete compatibility.ini from profile but when I deleted compatibility.ini Thunderbird still doesn’t pick my profile.

I found the only way to get rid of Supernova 115 was to revert back to a prior virtual machine that had ver 102.7.1.

Ver 102.7.1 would not accept the Supernova profile. I created a new profile.

Creating the new profile did not even ask me about existing accounts & existing mail. How do I get the accounts and mail in the old profile and move/copy them to the new profile?

Thanks so much, Mark.

I would really appreciate any thoughts on resolving the items below even if I do have to be chastised for not finding the solutions for myself. Thunderbird is running on a Windows 10 PC.

Whilst I appreciate the new ability to change the "spacing" between compact, default and relaxed I would appreciate knowing why it was not possible to change incrementally like we can now change Font Size?? There was a fix for this in previous versions which allowed me to display all of the folders that I wanted to display.

Why can the number of messages headers displayed only be 9 or more?

Why does the message header pane above the email content still have so much white space? It would still be totally readable if laid out in a different manner with much smaller line spacing.

I would also like to know why I cannot now have the likes of "get messages" in the menu bar? The current setup forces 2 toolbars or I can switch off the menu. I have had the 2 combined for some time.

With all the "improvements", why is there still no facility to order folders rather than having them alphabetically listed? The add-on to do this no longer works.

As you will guess, I am not best pleased with the changes in SuperNova as it has changed too many of the things that I have taken fore-granted over the years.

My thanks in advance for anything helpful the community is able to offer.

==================================

Have had to add an up date as I am still finding things that seem to no longer be possible.

The "Get Messages" button no longer has the drop down to allow getting new messages from one email address.

When displaying a folder's contents, the message bar at the bottom of the page no longer displays the message count. I know it can be displayed elsewhere on the screen but that takes up real-estate.

The hover and open nested folders is now instant which is a real nuisance as rolling the mouse cursor down the page opens a lot more nested folders than just the one I need.

With 102, if you used CTRL+ to magnify the content of an email, the magnification applied to all windows, for example if you opened a message full screen - not any more, they have been separated. Close the full screen window and it reverts to default size if you open to full screen again.

It is difficult to go back to version 102.15 because to do so needs a "new profile" because 115 changes the original and Thunderbird cannot cope with this.

I would love to know what prompted all of these changes as they have ruined my experience of what has been my go-to email client since version 3?

Can I roll back from version 115.3.1 to the previous version? I don't not like this new version at all. Surely an email client should be what it says, a means to receive, send and organise emails. I don't need 'chats' calendars or any other gizmo's.

Please just give us an email client that is the best, like it used to be.
