Weird dark mode behavior in the compose window

Hello,

I am using Thunderbird version 144.0.1 (build 20251016001905) on Windows 11 version 25H2. I want everything I use to be in dark mode, and I have managed to configure almost everything to work as I wish except for the Compose window.

I attach a capture of an email I received opened in the Compose window for reference. If I view this email in the 'Message pane', it displays as I want in its entirety : white text on a dark grey background, all the way down the reply chain.

However, if I click 'Reply' or 'Forward', the Compose window opens and the formatting of the message becomes skewed :

  • The part where I write is fine, and takes into account my preferences as configured in the settings.
  • However, the part where the previous message is included becomes a mess of formattings. Some parts are black text on my background colour, some parts are black text on a white background. It changed mid-lines sometimes. When the formatting is applied to a paragraph, I get a big white box that stretches accross the window.

I want the text to display as white text on a dark grey background. I also want the recipients to be able to open the mails I send in whatever formatting they want : my colleagues who use Outlook reported having skewed formatting from my emails (forced black background with varying text colour), which corrupted entire email chains afterwards.

I have tried the following : - In the 'Settings -> Composition' panel, I have tried all combinations of :

   - 'Use reader's default colors'
   - 'Use Paragraph format instead of Body Text by default'
   - All 4 'Sending formats'

- In the 'Add-ons Manager' panel :

   - All 3 default theme options : 'Dark', 'Light' and 'System theme - auto'.

- In the 'Advanced Preferences' :

   - Changing the 'editor.background_color' and 'editor.text_color' registers to what I want.
   - Changing the 'msgcompose.background_color' and 'msgcompose.text_color' to what I want (these seem to follow the 'Settings -> Composition' parameters anyway).

- Running Thunderbird in 'Troubleshooting mode' did not remove the issue.

I have included a screenshot of my 'Windows Settings -> Personalization -> Color' panel for reference. I have not touched these, as they affect the rest of my system and I do want the rest of my apps to keep behaving as they currently do.

I also find interesting that before 'upgrading' to Windows 11, I also used Thunderbird and had no such issue whatsoever. Unfortunately I do not have access to my previous Thunderbird configuration and information, as I installed Windows 11 from scratch instead of using the 'upgrade' process.

Since the 'Message pane' displays as I want, I assume it is possible to do what I want. I even tried to send myself the email with the skewed formatting, to check if it displayed correctly in the 'Message pane', and it did. However, I am at a loss for which parameters I need to check / uncheck for it to work. Please help !

Thanks, best regards, Aurelien

I have version 146 of Thunderbird. My OS is Windows 11. The Local Folders in Thunderbird are out of alphabetical order.

I have list of 130 local folders that are in the correct alphabetical order. Under that list, I have another list of 25 folders, starting with the letters L - U, that are in order alphabetically. I have tried to move several of them back up into their correct place in the list of 130 folders that are above them. This worked well for about 10 folders. Now, when I try to move a folder from the second set to its correct place in the group of 130 folders above them, they all end up in the same spot, between folders starting with De and Dra. When I try to move them away for this location, into their correct alphabetical slot, they will not move.

Also, when I try to create a New Subfolder under Local Folders, it is not created in the correct alphabetical location.

Does anyone know of an easy to correct these errors? I need to get my local folders in the correct order alphabetically again. Thank you.

I admit, I don't read about updates so I don't know when Firefox did all these "enhancements"...but I'd love to know how to turn my mouse wheel BACK into a "scroll through the page" only function. I hate it auto opening links, I hate it scrolling through tabs. I suspect it of doing other "helpful" functions...and I can't even find the right words to do a search for this. The only applicable setting I found is "autoscroll"...which is turned off in my preferences...and which the browser STILL does.

All I want is for my wheel to scroll through the page...under my control. No auto-stuff. There's no setting for this in my mouse controls, as far as I've been able to determine, and it didn't used to do this. It must be in a Firefox update. Is this even possible any longer? Or am I, after decades with Firefox, going to have to change browsers? At this point, I've had far too many important operations disrupted and even fouled by this "helpful" change.

Pleeeease help?

firefox is my browser. i have windows 11. all of my web (not app) shortcut icons on desktop are the white blank page icon. i used to see the icons for the sources -- the newspapers, etc. none of the standard windows fixes for this have worked. was there a firefox policy change that causes this? i Free Up Space to Onedrive for everything on desktop, but even when I apply Keep on This Device, the source icons still don't appear, so I don't think Onedrive is the issue. in some unsynced folders on the PC, web links appear with a generic blue planet icon, which is as generic as the white page icons on the desktop. I've tried the fixes for windows 11 but none of them have worked. any ideas of a firefox fix for this? thanks!

I have just installed Thunderbird for the first and set it up with 2 email accounts. So far so good, but I am puzzled why I have the following situation:

Under Unified Folders, as well as the expected folders Inbox, Sent, Draft, etc., I have Account 1 Folder, Account 2 Folder, and Local Folders.

Separated by a line and underneath these I have All Folders, beneath which I again have Account 1, Account 2, and Local Folders.

Is it possible to get rid of this unnecessary duplication?

My wife and I have separate emails and we also share an email account. My laptopn has Thunderbird profile set up to receive from both and data is held on our local NAS Wifes Laptop does the same and her data is on her folder on local NAS. For the shared email, we can each access and it creates a local copy on BOTH of our respective folders on the NAS. Whilst this works, i cant help wondering if we're setting up a sync loop. THe shared email isnt used much, but is there a way that we can share the exact same files /data for the shared email on the local NAS. ie. Still have one view in Thunderbird client but have the shared email data be on a common shared folder. Still keeping our separate profiles. This worked for Outlook pst files. But New Outlook is a disaster hence moving to THunderbird. . This seems to be a simple scenario. 3 email accounts 1 shared. 3 local data sets. One shared. 2 separate laptopns and THunderbird installations. One common local NAS. ANyone have any guidance for best practice ? THanks

I’ve been troubleshooting the compose‑window font behavior in Thunderbird and discovered something that seems inconsistent from a user‑experience standpoint. After resetting all the font mappings (Proportional, Serif, Sans‑serif, Monospace, Minimum font size, etc.), I noticed that the font used in the message body can never match the font used in the Subject line or the rest of the Thunderbird interface. The Subject line and UI elements use Segoe UI, which is the standard Windows system font. However, Segoe UI does not appear anywhere in Thunderbird’s compose‑font dropdown lists, even though it’s clearly installed and used throughout the rest of the application. This creates a confusing situation: - The interface uses one set of fonts (Windows UI fonts like Segoe UI) - The compose window uses a completely different set (web‑safe/message‑safe fonts like Times New Roman, Arial, Courier New) - The user cannot choose the same font for both areas, even if the font is installed on the system - The dropdown lists in different parts of Thunderbird do not match, even though they appear to be selecting fonts from the same computer From a user perspective, it would make much more sense if all font dropdowns in Thunderbird used the same unified list of system‑available fonts, so the user could choose consistently across the entire app. Right now, the separation between UI fonts and message‑body fonts isn’t obvious, and it leads to confusion when trying to restore defaults or match the appearance of the Subject line. I’m posting this to ask whether this limitation is intentional, a technical constraint, or something that could be improved in future versions. A unified, system‑wide font list would make the experience much clearer and more predictable for users. Thanks for any clarification Steve

I am trying to set up a visualization of the columns of the main interface. Here's what I do:

  1. Click on the list icon in the top right corner.
  2. Uncheck the columns I want to hide. Specifically, From (CB), Recipient (CB), and Correspondents (CB).
  3. Apply the selection to all folders: click on the icon in the top right corner, apply columns to.. > folders and its children... > select account > Confirm

These actions produce immediate results. However, the next day or a few days later, when I reopen the program, the column display changes. Sometimes in the main folder (inbox), sometimes in the subfolders.

Is this a known bug? Is there anything I can do to keep the desired column configuration stable?
