Thanks for this post about your experience with the ZTE Open from Ebay. I apologize for this inconvenience while the problem is worked out.

It is true that the most recent update fails ungracefully, but it does demonstrate a strong interest in getting fastboot on those devices for developers (if there was no interest, no attempt to update would have been served).

Then OEMs perform hardware integration testing, so that is what is going on now for v1.1 from what I understand.

I believe that after fastboot is available, developers will be able to build and flash their own updates, so I'm finding out what documentation we'll have available at that time and I'll post back when I get a link to it.

I already gave up, just use it as is (as a phone, music player, email), and let go the fantasy that this can be a powerhouse internet surfing device, since it kept telling me "sorry" "reload" 'crashed".

FFOS 1.1 was out for peak two months ago, and still no hope land on ZTE Open.

and ZTE has twice sent out "system" updates that cannot be finished.

I bought the phone expecting Mozilla being in charge pushing out update. Now it turns out this is just like google and samsung, with the manufacturer in charge, and update is 3-6 month late......

Good its cheap. I hope mozilla change things when releasing expensive version, because good wish and brand loyalty can only go so far.

Well, I believe the answer to my questions would be: 1) No plan to credit users for ZTE Open if they would like to swap. 2) No idea whatsoever when 1.1 will be available, or indeed, whether it will be available at all for ZTE users.

ZTE is clearly not directing resources to supporting this platform. 1.1 implementation is months late, updates crash, and Mozilla has publicly washed their hands of the matter, pointing their fingers at ZTE. This is what the low end users should expect, I suppose.

I don't work for Mozilla but as far as I am aware it was always the plan that the Geeksphone developer preview phones would get updates before commercial handsets because the developers using those phones require the updates for testing.

That blog post says: "This Firefox OS update will be available for current users and on developer phones soon"

Also this blog post says: "New Firefox OS phones will have the latest version of Firefox OS (1.1), which includes many performance improvements and new features like MMS messaging. Existing Firefox OS users will be upgraded to the latest version soon."

I assume that includes the ZTE Open.

According to https://marketplace.firefox.com/developers/dev_phone the ZTE Open is a developer phone. Hopefully this means that preview images will be available for the device in a timely manner. However, based on the initial response to problems with the ZTE Open, I doubt this will be likely.

Disappointing. It is a developer phone so I'm cutting it some slack but that can only stretch so far. Really hope they get this fixed out soon.

They already "fixed" it by calling the ZTE Open a developer phone. Presumably this has the expectation that owners will be compiling the OS and updating the device themselves.

Oh, ZTE open will not support it, so we have to build our own updates? I didn't realize this, I bought the phone to develop apps.

It does appear that other developer phones like the Geeksphone ARE getting updates. It appear that there are tiers of developer phones, and the ZTE Open is the bottom tier.

So where is the boot image I need? all the tutorials say I need a hacked version?

Once your phone has fastboot enabled, you will then be able to build and install new Firefox OS/B2G builds on it (start at the build prerequisite instructions, and treat the ZTE like it is an Inari device, for the purposes of configuration), and recover your phone if necessary, using the procedure cited in the I bricked my phone section.

If you encounter errors about setting the system time while flashing a custom build, you may need to download a modified boot image."

So it appears we do have to use hacked third party files. Anyone have a link to 1.1 or 1.2 stable already built?

http://www.zteusa.com/support_page/ no longer shows the ZTE Open. I'm guessing there's not going to be a 1.1 update.

Hi Doramia, You are correct; updating the ZTE Open requires compiling the updates yourself and then trying to find the hacked third party boot image. Sadly neither ZTE nor Mozilla seem to care about the people foolish enough to purchase a ZTE Open.

You know what would be awesome?

If firefox would put up precompiled images, instead of forcing me to build it myself. Instead of a five hour download, half a day spent trying to build it on a 64bit Linux Mint machine (protip, you have to deprecate GCC,G++ and load an insecure version of Java to do it) only to brick my phone. I found version 1.3 but perhaps someone could host new versions of 1.1 and 1.2 on their page? if I have to use a hacked third party file, why not the entire OS?

A couple of ad links, and someone might even make a few bucks off of frustrated ZTE Open users.

I've always wondered why it was necessary to install Java on a 64 bit machine in order to compile a 32 OS written in C++

Will they push OTA, you reckon? Or are we expected to flash from SD card?

It's to be loaded onto an SD card. The zip file comes with instruction to do so. I contacted the ebay store last week and asked if they could request ZTE to release the update since ZTE insisted they would only release update upon requested from "carriers" only. I just downloaded the zip file and will try to update the phone later.

Already done my friend! WARNING!!; It'll reset the phone. So back up contacts. Also ZTE's bad English instructions; rename extracted ZIP to "update.zip" before applying via SD card.
