I see the firefox phones for sale on ebay and want to buy one. Which carrier can I use it on?

Chosen solution

The carrier must allow you to bring your own phone in and has to have a SIM card for you. Unfortunately, there is no more of the ZTE Open that are being sold officially on eBay. There are resellers selling them. You can also pre-order for a Peak+ here.

I think ZTE is said to bringing more open in Sept.

I am using it on T-Mobile right now.

It might work better on AT&T due to the 3G frequencies supported by the phone and the one that AT&T deploys.

T-Mobile only started deploying 850-1900MHz in select markets and if you are not in one the phone will switch back to 2G.

Neither Sprint nor Verizon will work as they use CDMA.

This seems like the best place to deposit additional information about AT&T and ZTE Open US from Ebay.

NOTE: AT&T told me directly that this phone is considered a smartphone, and as such requires a smartphone plan.

AT&T has two prepaid GoPhone plans with data that will work with ZTE Open US, see official menu (zip code required).

  1. $50/month, Basic/quick messaging phone plan. ZTE Open US can be set to use only 2G EDGE network: Settings : Cellular & Data : Network operator : Network type. This plan is truly unlimited because it is considered slow enough to prevent excessive data usage.
  2. $60/month, Smartphone plan. By default, ZTE Open US will use high speed 3.5G HSPA network. This plan is limited to 2GB/month transit, extra 1GB for $10.

Technically speaking, the first plan is compatible with 3.5G HSPA network, but termination of service is likely to happen sooner than it would otherwise (using the phone with the first plan probably violates your agreement anyway).

The second plan is worth the extra $10; you can set the phone to 2G EDGE by default and reserve 3.5G HSPA for times when you really need it.

The Usage app is indispensable in preventing unexpected overages. It is included in Notifications pulldown, allowing for real time monitoring, so you can make sure it works.

  1. Launch an app that uses data.
  2. Pull down Notifications and watch Usage increase.

When using 2G EDGE, the icon in Status bar and Quick Access is E. When using 3.5G HSPA, the icon is H.
