AVG Internet Security 9 has several features that interact with Firefox. This article describes how to configure AVG Internet Security 9 for use with Firefox.

Firewall

AVG Internet Security has a firewall component that controls network traffic to and from your computer. If you find that Firefox cannot connect (and receive Server not found) errors, remove Firefox from AVG Internet Security's Firewall and add it back manually:

  1. Open AVG User Interface - click on the Windows Start button, select All Programs, AVG 9.0, and then select AVG User Interface.
  2. In the AVG Internet Security window, click the Tools menu and then select Firewall settings... to open the Firewall settings window.
  3. Look for Mozilla Firefox in the list of applications, and click on it to select it.

  5. Click the Add button.
  6. Click the ... button, then navigate to the Firefox installation directory (e.g. C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\), then select the firefox.exe item, and then click the Open button.
  7. Ensure that the Application action is set to Allow for all.

Controlling AVG Firefox add-ons

AVG Internet Security automatically installs extensions for Firefox. Some users may prefer to use Firefox without these extensions.

AVG Security Toolbar

AVG Internet Security 9 automatically installs a Firefox toolbar. To disable it:

  1. On the menu bar, click Tools and select Add-ons. The Add-ons window will appear.
  2. Click to select the Extensions panel.
  3. Click to select AVG Security Toolbar.
  4. Click the Disable button.
  5. Click the Restart Firefox button to make the changes take effect.

Disabling the AVG Security Toolbar does not affect your antivirus or firewall protection settings.

The AVG Safe Search and Link Scanner features may cause unnecessary network traffic. Firefox already protects you from malicious links - see How the phishing and malware protection in Firefox works for information. To disable the AVG features and just use the built-in Firefox protection:

  1. Disable the AVG Safe Search extension in Firefox:
    1. On the menu bar, click Tools and select Add-ons. The Add-ons window will appear.
    2. Click to select the Extensions panel.
    3. Click to select AVG Safe Search.
    4. Click the Disable button.
    5. Click the Restart Firefox button to make the changes take effect.
  2. Change AVG's settings:
    1. Close Firefox.
    2. Open AVG User Interface - click on the Windows Start button, select All Programs, AVG 9.0, and then select AVG User Interface.
    3. In the AVG Internet Security window, click the Tools menu and then select Advanced settings... to open the Advanced AVG Settings window.
    4. On the left side of the window, click Web Shield. The Web Shield panel will open in the right side of the window.
    5. Click to uncheck the Enable Web Shield box, then click the Apply button.
    6. On the left side of the window, click Link Scanner. Link Scanner settings panel will open in the right side of the window.
    7. Click to uncheck the Enable AVG Search-shield and Enable the AVG Active Surf-Shield boxes. Then click the Apply button.
    8. On the left side of the window, click Ignore Faulty Conditions. The Ignore faulty components condition panel will open in the right side of the window.
    9. Click to check the LinkScanner and Web Shield boxes. Then click the Apply button.
    10. Click the OK button to close the Advanced AVG Settings window.
    11. Click the X in the top-right corner of the AVG Internet Security window to close it.
