I'd like to be able to press an alphanumeric key while in my bookmarks and jump to that letter or number in my list?
If you think about this then you must agree. As a user saves bookmarks (BM) the list grows and grows. It takes a while for the mouse to scroll through all the BM's to reach the desired BM. Having the ability to press any alphanumeric while in ones BM list can help to speed the process of getting to that portion of the BM list which is desired.
Also, I am still somewhat unclear about how BM separators can help me work with my selected BMs.
My main objective here is to be able to open my BM list and navigate quickly to a particular BM in my list. For example, if I have a BM titled Skiing in the Alps but I am at the start of my long list then I want to be able to type in the letter "S" while in my list of BMs and jump right to the BMs starting with the letter "S".
I realize now, after studying the writings on BMs, that I can use Tags. But that is not what I am seeking here. Suppose I just want to jump right to the start of the "S" BMs in my list that didn't have a tag. Then in this case having the ability which I speak of here would be very helpful.

If you open the bookmarks in the sidebar and you click to the far left in the bookmarks list then pressing one or more letters will make Firefox jump to a bookmark that starts with those letters.
If you press more than one letter then you need to do this quickly enough to prevent starting a new search.
So pressing 's' and 'k' should bring you to a bookmark the starts with 'sk', you can repeat this to go to the next match.
Note that this only works if the folder with that bookmark is open and this bookmark or folder is visible.

On the drop-down menu, Windows 7 only pays attention to the first letter. In other words, pressing S takes me to the first bookmark (actually a folder) whose name starts with S, and pressing S again take me to the next one, and so on, circling through the menu. I can expand a folder using right-arrow, then pressing S will circle through the items in that expanded part of the menu. I believe this is a platform convention for how menus work across all Windows applications.

You can set your location bar to browse bookmarks. Is that what you are looking to do?
I want to thank you for this answer. This problem has been bugging me for quite some time. I noticed just now that if I open the Bookmarks menu and go to the center of the line reading: "Bookmark this page" in the white area of the line and I type a letter, let's say the letter "T", then the list jumps to the first folder beginning with the letter "T". That solves my problem. And it will make my searches through my bookmarks a lot easier.
Wholly cow, I just realized that I can go back to the top of the bookmarks menu from within the bookmarks menu, say at letter "T" (see above), just by pressing Control + Home.
Yippie........I finally solved a problem that's been bothering me for such a long time. I hope for those of you who are also reading this post that I've helped you too.

Follow these steps:
- Go to Options
- Go to the Privacy tab
- Select Bookmarks from the drop-down menu in the Location Bar section
If done correctly, typing a letter in the location bar will display bookmarks with those letters.

Computer Whiz: Your advice shows an interesting group of controls, which I didn't know about. But it doesn't address the actual question, which Cor-el suggested an answer and I even added a comment/answer too. For me now, I feel this question has been answered. In your answer the elimination of history from the drop down box and only selecting bookmarks doesn't do anything more to help me navigate the cursor within the bookmarks menu. What Cor-el and I suggested in my extension of his idea works much better. Thank you anyway for trying to provide an answer.
