When I tried to install an addon, it downloaded and told me to restart Firefox, which I did. However, when I opened the addon menu, the addon wasn't there. Furthermore, some (and only some) addons, like Adblock Plus, stopped working. I tried to reinstall the addon, and it said it had installed (with no need to restart). I opened the addon menu again, and the addon was there and said it was enabled, but it wasn't working. When I clicked the Options button, Firefox froze in an odd way: My mouse would not click anywhere on the window, but I could still scroll with the wheel, manipulate tabs with keyboard shortcuts, and type in the address bar and other fields. I restarted, removed the addon, restarted again, and finally ABP started working again and all was back to normal. I tried this with several different addons, and it behaved the exact same way each time. Anybody know what's going on?

Hi,

You can try deleting the extensions.* files in the Firefox Profile Folder after exiting Firefox. To open the profile folder via Firefox: Help (Alt + H) > Troubleshooting Information > Show Folder.

Firefox Profile Folder & Files

It would also be a good idea to install the extension or other extensions via Firefox Tools (Alt + T) > Add-ons, search box on the top right, or from AMO.

You may also have to make sure that security software (antivirus, firewall etc.) aren't interfering.

Unable to install themes or extensions

Troubleshooting extensions and themes

If the problem persists, you can also Reset Firefox and start afresh.

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information. Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.
