Lost my Bookmarks, after installing a new version

Just occurred to me that maybe you use the Bookmarks Menu and not the sidebar to view bookmarks, bring up the Bookmarks Sidebar ("Ctrl+B") and expand items there if you see your bookmarks, if so, then you are okay, and can just skip down to the last footnote at bottom and restore your menu bar. Otherwise...

Sounds like you loaded, not updated, a new version of Firefox. What you should have done in that case is not allow the install to open firefox for you but to end the install when finished without that last step and then open Firefox yourself in your normal manner. With an update there is no such problem.

What you need to do is to fine the profile you were using before and then to open up that profile from the Firefox profile manager.

Steps to find your old profile. All profiles are together in a folder on your system named "Profiles".

  1. Type about:support into the location bar
  2. Click on the "Open Containing Folder: button on the page.
  3. You will be in your current profile, write down the filename, now
  4. Go up one level to Profiles, look at the dates in each profile of places.sqlite and find the profile that was in use before you updated write down the profile name.
  5. If you find such a profile you are all set, and need only to bring up the Profile Manager with that profile instead of your new profile.
  6. Bring Firefox down, with File/Firefox-button then Exit, check the processes tab of the Windows 7 Task Manager ("Ctrl+Shift+Esc") to make sure Firefox is down.

Bring up the Firefox Profile Manager as directed in

Picking up your answers

  • There is a "Get email updates" in the upper right corner of each questions page that applies only to the question on that page. (you must do this for each question you want an email notification of activity for). To stop receiving updates on a question go to its page (like the one in the email) and click on "Stop email updates" (it only applies to the one question).
  • You can click on "My Contributions" -- https://support.mozilla.com/questions?filter=my-contributions (at the top of a main forum page) -- and sort on "Most Recent" (recently updated appear first). You could create a bookmark for the page. (If you check your contributions here regularly, this is a good alternative to receiving email.)
Select Support Questions and put the username in the Asked by field. Inefficient search.

Feedback is important, whether suggestion works or not; problem remains open as unsolved until marked as solved by the owner (Original Poster).

  • Marking an answer as solved helps, also if there were several solutions/suggestions within a chosen solution an additional note on which part specifically helped you would also be appreciated. Only the original poster can mark as solved, but even if you are not the original poster any answer that helped for you can be marked as helpful. Marking as solved does not prevent additional replies but it does indicate the issue is resolved with you.

Item #4 in the following tells you how to restore your menu bar

  • "Alt "" to bring up the menu bar
  • View > Toolbars > select the missing toolbars, and perhaps uncheck tabs on top.

You can make Firefox 6.0 look like Firefox 3.6.*, see numbered items 1-10 in the following topic Fix Firefox 4.0 toolbar user interface, problems (Make Firefox 4.0 thru 6.0, look like 3.6). Whether or not you make changes, you should be aware of what has changed and what you have to do to use changed or missing features.

There is a lot more beyond those first 10 steps listed, if you want to make Firefox more functional.
