After installing 4.0 my bookmark folders in the sidebar vanished, leaving an interminable list.

After installing 4.0 I could no longer see my bookmarks in the sidebar, but they were accessible by clicking on Bookmarks in the Navigation Toolbar. I've uninstalled 4.0 and reinstalled 3.6.6 but now my beloved folder system is missing from the sidebar (but not from Bookmarks). How do I get back to square one - I lpartly ive my life through the sidebar folder system.

Thanks cor-el, that was almost it. Deleting localstore.rdf didn't do it, but deleting ALL the .sqlite files in the same folder worked a treat - I suppose by forcing a rebuild of both .sqlite files and a JSON back-up. And giving me back my obsessively intricate folder system in the bookmarks sidebar. So thanks for putting me on the right track.

Try to delete localstore.rdf or rename to localstore.rdf.sav in the Profile Folder to test if the file is corrupted. See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Corrupt_localstore.rdf (caution: do not delete the localstore.rdf file in the Firefox program installation folder)

Note: Deleting the file localstore.rdf will reset the customizations of the toolbars to the defaults. You can rename localstore.rdf to localstore.rdf.sav to test if that solves it. Then you can restore the customization by copying localstore.rdf.sav to localstore.rdf if it didn't work.
