I am using version 34.0.5. After updating successfully a few days ago, I was customizing the tool bar and I added the "show sidebars" button to the toolbar. At that moment my search bar went blank and I have not been able to fix it.

Have tried:
-starting in safe mode
-restoring my profile from a FEBE backup
-resetting Firefox to default state

In the screenshots you can see what the search bar looks like now both in the toolbar and in the customize screen:

I was wrong. I tried Safe Mode again and found it was an extension creating the problem: Organize Search Engines. Somehow I must have missed this the first time I tried.

Problem solved.

Are you using a custom theme that might possibly be broken?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Have tried that already, including changing the theme and disabling hardware acceleration
