To revert to Google as your preferred search engine, please do the following.
- In the location bar, type about:config and hit Enter.
- In the filter at the top, type: keyword.URL
- Double click it and remove whatever's in there and replace it with http://www.google.com/search?q=
The URL to add in "keyword.URL" becomes a link in this post, so right click it and choose "Copy Link Location" to copy it to the Windows clipboard. Then hit CTRL+V to paste it. Saves you having to type the whole thing.
To reset your home page, do the following.
- Go to the site you want to set as your homepage.
- Click the orange Firefox button and go to Options | Options | General.
- Make sure it says "Show My Homepage" in the first dropdown menu.
- Click the button called "Use Current Pages" to set the homepage to the one you have on the screen.
After you complete the above steps, install this add-on to prevent another search engine from modifying your preferences: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/browserprotect/
Hello
I appreciate your response and gave it a try but the only thing that changed is under options it shows the home page I selected but searchq.com/406 comes up when I open firefox anyway. The addon prompt me that it is trying and asks for my reaction I choose to block but it doesn't work searchq.com/406 comes up anyway. Any help would b e appreciated.
Thanks Vern

I had this problem and after trying many things, I ended up looking in my add remove programs in the control panel, then clicking on the publisher so it was in alpha order and looking for an entry Boo-something. Sorry I can't remember what it was exactly but it was a tool bar.
After downloading a free video down loader at ilivid.com, I found that Firefox, IE Explorer and Google Chrome had all been hijacked.
I ran a virus scan and found two infected files but the browsers had already been hijacked. After removing the two infected files, my Firefox still defaulted to the http://www.searchnu.com/406 page and any new tab I opened defaulted there as well.
I found the help I needed at; https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/home
Once there, search "Troubleshooting extensions and themes." That page helped me to identify the problem as an extension named DataMngr 1.0.
Disabling this extension solved my problem. In Windows XP, this amounted to; 1. Clicking "Tools" on the menu bar 2. Selecting "Add-ons" 3. Disabling the "DataMngr 1.0" extension 4. Restarting Firefox
