I don't know if that is possible. Why do you want this?

Go to the Mozilla Add-ons Web Page {web Link} (There’s a lot of good stuff here) and search for what you want.

I don't know if knowing why is useful to resolve the case, nor if redirect to FFA is (considering that it's the first place we search for, way before even thinking posting to support)

But I need that function to open a bunch of links that I can't open with SnapLink and I don't want to return in the tab at each clicks

I don't know if this is what you want. Hold down the <Shift> key and press the middle mouse button on the link.

It doesn't change the behaviour at all

You can open links in the background if that is what you are after.

These prefs on the about:config page control whether links are opened with a left-click in the background or get focus: You can toggle the default action for opening a link in the background by holding down the Shift key when you use Ctrl plus left-click or middle-click a link.

  • browser.tabs.loadInBackground (normal links)
  • browser.tabs.loadDivertedInBackground (javascript)
  • browser.tabs.loadBookmarksInBackground (bookmarks)
  • browser.search.context.loadInBackground (context menu: Search)

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can click the button to "Accept the Risk and Continue".

Holding shift still does nothing, worse, it focus in any case But without shift and with browser.tabs.loadBookmarksInBackground and browser.tabs.loadDivertedInBackground and browser.search.context.loadInBackground set to true it effectively stay at the same tab, thanks!

Sad to learn that in the future you willnt work to expand the hidden functionalities of Firefox, but it's its modularity and open sourceness that make its power. Otherwise it's only an uber-Chrome. Especially today with the new direction

I honestly don't know which browser I will chose if FF cease to be what it is, because literally no other browser are nearly as functional. All other are made for regular user, like... To open a web page... And that's all

Hi Pistache, There's no change in policy; that's how about:config has always been. We've just had a rising issue in recent years in which websites and volunteers would point users to about:config without explaining what it is. When a preference stops working in a future release, the users would complain that the "feature" no longer works. As a result, I'm trying to prevent that misunderstanding.

more options

You should always be cautious with making changes to pref as the warning when you open about:config is there for a reason. When you change a pref that is about a feature you understand and it is working for you then most of the time you will be OK. There are websites that list a lot of tweaks to speed up Firefox and following such advice is highly discouraged as some prefs shouldn't be changed unless you know what you are doing and if there are caveats.

For opening a tab in the background or foreground there is a setting in Settings, but this only covers one of the possible cases.

  • Settings -> General -> Tabs
"When you open a link, image or media in a new tab, switch to it immediately" (browser.tabs.loadInBackground)

For other cases the only option is to make the change directly on the about:config page. You can keep a note of prefs you change and you can always search internet to see if there are other references about involved prefs.

This is one of the cases where in the past the Firefox devs didn't consider a feature important enough to provide full control via the user interface and left it to extension developers to provide support for this feature. This option ended with the switch from Legacy extension to Web extensions in 57+ that have only limited API support and this focus control is now only possible directly via about:config.
