Firefox closes itself once per day, and when reopened has changed my search engine to something called "Default Search Engine."

I'm on a Mac with the latest OS, no new security or software updates available. Every day for about 4 months, Firefox will just close itself, not crash, just close, and upon reopening has had the search engine changed from my usual (Bing), to something called "Default Search Engine". when typing anything into the search bar, after an extremely quick flash of a page that says not secure, I'm sent to Yahoo. I've done refreshes multiple times, uninstalled and reinstalled add-ons, and tried to look in my system files for anything suspicious, but my understanding of them is pretty elementary. I'm suspecting some sort of malware as the most likely source, but if anybody can help me with this I would really appreciate it. It's happened when using Chrome too.

You can check for recently installed suspicious or unknown extensions. Note that you may have to start Firefox is Troubleshoot Mode not make the extension appear on the Add-ons page.

Start Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration or userChrome.css is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Themes
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Troubleshoot Mode start window

You can do a malware scan just to be sure.
