I am currently using Version 2.0.0.19 (released in Dec. 2008, I think), but am having so many issues that I'm finally being driven to download a more current one. My question is if it is possible to download and use a new one, but keep my old one as well, just to use it to look up old emails. I would hope to "store" this older version somewhere just to access those old letters, because I've read horror stories of people losing old saved emails when upgrading to a newer Thunderbird.

You can install TB 78 in a separate Programs File directory, and to keep the 78 profile folder separate from the one used by TB 2, don't run 78 at the end of the installation, but open a Run window (Winkey+R), and start Profile Manager by entering:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Thunderbird78R\thunderbird.exe -p

or whatever the path is to the 78 exe file. Create a new profile and give it a name like TB78. Don't check the box to have a profile opened by default until you've moved to 78 permanently.

You should be able to copy mail from the TB 2 profile to the 78 profile, but for now you can run TB 2 on the TB 2 profile by launching TB 2 as before. To transfer address books from the 2 to the 78 profile, export them as LDIF files with 2 and import them in 78.
