Dear support,

There has been some recent changes in Thunderbird about Correspondent (or Sender or Recipient) column: when someone is not in your address book, their e-mail is displayed in the column, making it really long. Is there a way to disable such a change?

Thank you!

I'm using Windows 10 OS and Thunderbird version 60.7.2

In 'Correspondents' or 'From' column, I only see the email address if the sender does not include a display name. eg: if From is :

  1. name <email address> then I see the name.
  2. <email address> then I see the email address

What OS are you using and what verion of Thunderbird ? Do you see the same if you restart Thunderbird in 'Safe Mode' ? https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/safe-mode-thunderbird

I see no change in Thunderbird that could account for what your say is happening. I can also not see this in my mail.

Could it be you are using a mailing list from Yahoo which has changed the way the put names to emails in their lists. Now showing the name and email address in the "display name" field and then making the from email address the mailing list. Yahoo pioneered the silly idea, but more and more mailing lists are following along as it gets harder and harder for mailing lists at say example.com to send mail that purports to be from someone at outlook.com or mycompany.net. The folks that look after SPAM filtering at lots of mail servers do no actually think outside the box for things like mailing lists. They mark the mail as spam and sometimes even refuse delivery, so the mailing lists have to adapt.

It has also caused a lot of confusion for folk adding mailing list addresses when they think they are adding someone to their address books and having the mailing list suddenly become that some one in the mail lists.

Dear Matt,

Thanks for this answer. However, I am not using any Yahoo mailing-list, and this occurs for all messages from senders (or to recipients) who are not in my address book.

Let's assume I had not noticed that this full "From" field was systematically displayed, instead of only the name, what can I do to set this parameter? Is there any extension doing the job?

Thank you very much: this has led to the guilty extension, which was CardBook v36.6. I guess that I will be able to toggle to the right display in the Preferences menu of this extension.
