Today is November 14th and I allowed The download of the promised new and improved Firefox. I HATE IT ALREADY. I have lost 75% of my add-ons. I have lost the extra toolbars where just one extra positionable toolbar would help. There is hardly any options in customizing. I checked the help section where it was suggested it wasn't safe to go back so is it just a case of wait and see if the older add-ons are updated or what. It has been rendered impossible for me to use this for everyday use and I did prefer Firefox over everybody else.

Hello, you can downgrade, and still get security updates by installing Firefox ESR, you can get it from here: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/all/

You can go back to an old version by using an installer from https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/56.0.2/ to backup your profile and addons.

If you can post your addons that don't work we can see if there are alternatives.

Couldn't enter the suggested website. I tried to copy or print my Legacy extensions with no luck. I tried to find a replacement for a couple and found only 74 updates to choose from. The used to be thousands. I think this new and improved Firefox was released too early. It is absolutely ridiculous.

There are security reasons not to revert to Firefox 56.

If you want to use an older version of Firefox that will continue to receive security updates through next Spring, you can consider the Extended Support Release of Firefox 52. Please see the link from Mkll earlier in this thread.

You may want to make a "just in case" backup of your currently active Firefox folder. This article has suggestions on that: Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles.

Try https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/56.0.2/win64/

This seems to work well if there is a Firefox 57 compatable Extension. Can use google search terms : Firefox Extension <old extension name> Comparable Note that some Developers are still coding and are not yet finished. Should check each Extension to see, other wise try the search suggestion or go backwards.

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

Hi dexrek, I know it's hard to deal with disruptive changes. Only you can decide which is the right decision for your needs.

You didn't mention any particular extensions that are essential to your use of Firefox, but if there are some you cannot live without, and you aren't able to find replacements -- feel free to ask, you don't need to search for everything yourself -- then you may need to use an older version of Firefox for the time being.

Regarding the number of extensions available, there probably are thousands for Firefox 57, but certain kinds of changes are no longer allowed, such as creating whole new toolbars. This is under consideration for the future, so perhaps it will be possible by Firefox 59. I have no idea at this point.

I use:- 1) Auto form fill ( i'm disabled and can not type only use mouse and onscreen keyboard) 2) Classic Theme Restorer 3) Facebook Messenger panel ( I use messenger frequently in place of phone that I can't use) 4) My Homepage 5) New add-on Bar 6) Download Manager 7) Download Manager Tweak 8) classic buttons 9) Open link in new tab 10) Spell checker and thesaurus

That's just some.

more options

Hi dexrek, if there is no alternative to this --

1) Auto form fill ( i'm disabled and can not type only use mouse and onscreen keyboard)

-- then it sounds as though you'll need to return to an earlier version since that would make much of the web unusable for you.

For the others:

Classic Theme Restorer => This extension has a zillion features, so it would depend on what you're modifying. The author has been posting workarounds here: https://github.com/Aris-t2/CustomCSSforFx/

Facebook Messenger panel => there seem to be a lot of add-ons like this, but I definitely haven't tried any of them myself: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/search/?platform=windows&q=facebook+messenger

My Homepage => New Tab Override is the best extension for this: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/new-tab-override/

New add-on Bar => No, extensions cannot create completely separate toolbars in Firefox 57

Download Manager => There are a lot of extensions with similar names, so I can't tell which one this is. Can you get the exact version number from the Add-ons page? Click the "More" link for the extension.

Download Manager Tweak => I have no idea if anything like this exists for Firefox 57. It looks like something from the Firefox 19 era!

classic buttons => Extensions in Firefox 57 cannot modify or replace built-in buttons with different ones, but custom style rules might be able to do it. You might wait a bit on this one because the author of Classic Toolbar Buttons has been posting numerous style rules but updating them very frequently. https://github.com/Aris-t2/CustomCSSforFx/releases/

Open link in new tab => We had a request earlier today, but I don't know the most convenient approach. For reference: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1184461

Spell checker and thesaurus => There may be alternatives, but this isn't something I've looked into before.

more options

Open link in new tab => I did find a new-ish extension in a search that you could try:

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/open-link-with-new-tab/

It appears you may need to use the Add-ons page to set your preferred behavior. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
  • type or paste about:addons in the address bar and press Enter/Return

In the left column of the Add-ons page, click Extensions. Then find the extension on the right side and click its Options button or More link. That should take you to the panel where you can adjust its settings.

If you try it, let us know if it works for you.

Important question: Please provide me step by step on how to go back to Firefox ESR from Quantum? (from start to end)? (I am afraid that I will corrupt anything so I am asking for step by step.)

Other questions: 1. Do I need to uninstall Firefox Quantum first, then install Firefox ESR? 2. When I uninstall Quantum, will my bookmarks/addons be uninstalled/deleted? 3. What are the things to do after installing Firefox ESR to make it look the same (bookmarks/addons...) as the version before Quantum? 4. Can I install Firefox Quantum and Firefox ESR together on the same PC? Will using them together mess up the profile or will they share the same profile (bookmarks/addons...) 5. Can I continue to use Firefox ESR after June 2018? When the support for Firefox ESR end in Jun 2018, I guess I will be switching to Quantum as most addons should be compatible by then, what shall I do to properly uninstall ESR and install Quantum?

Thanks a lot. Appreciate all help.

jscher2000 mention "There are security reasons not to revert to Firefox 56.", I am wondering what kind of security flaw will happen? It seems a PC antivirus will do the job and the Firefox security reasons are too amplified to create fear so that people will install Quantum or update to the latest version? Just a thought from me (a noob).

Got a fire fox update and now I have a unwanted new quatum version and lost all my add ons share buttons, ect. I tried to add them again and all were not compatable with this new version of fire fox. Not happy with this at all and when tried to get support help and how to reverse this again no help. I find this upsetting that Fire Fox did this the way they did. Like a few others here writing about the same disappointed new version and I can't get the downgrade or the reverse option to come up either and I would kike to know as well how to do this step by step. Any help would be thankful. Getting compatable share buttons so I can continue my usual work would be great. What's the changes of this happening? email:

I have not done this myself, so it is based on my general understanding of Firefox.

First, back up your settings: Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles.

1. Do I need to uninstall Firefox Quantum first, then install Firefox ESR?

Usually, no. But you can if you like.

2. When I uninstall Quantum, will my bookmarks/addons be uninstalled/deleted?

Not if you just use Firefox's uninstaller (through the Windows Control Panel, Uninstall a Program). Do not use something like Revo Uninstaller.

You can get an installer for ESR here: https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/organizations/all/

3. What are the things to do after installing Firefox ESR to make it look the same (bookmarks/addons...) as the version before Quantum?

The Extended Support Release of Firefox 52 is Firefox 52 plus security updates and looks like Firefox 52. There may be some differences from Firefox 56, but it will be very familiar.

Some add-ons may have updated in recent weeks to become less compatible with Firefox 52, and you may need to return to their pages on the Add-ons site, click the All Versions link, and install an older version.

4. Can I install Firefox Quantum and Firefox ESR together on the same PC? Will using them together mess up the profile or will they share the same profile (bookmarks/addons...)

Never share a profile between different versions if you want your data to stay intact and uncorrupted. You can copy key files between two different profiles.

I think the installer desperately wants to re-use the existing Firefox program folder for whatever you are installing, so it is difficult to install them side-by-side. Someone may know of a trick.

5. Can I continue to use Firefox ESR after June 2018? When the support for Firefox ESR end in Jun 2018, I guess I will be switching to Quantum as most addons should be compatible by then, what shall I do to properly uninstall ESR and install Quantum?

ESR has its own upgrade path. 52 will be replaced by 59 next June. So that will be Quantum plus another 14 weeks of new developments.

@jscher2000 thanks for your reply.

"Usually, no. But you can if you like." > If I do not uninstall Quantum first then install ESR, will both programs use and open same profile/bookmarks/addons? Is it fine to use/open both Quantum and ESR at the same time?

If I uninstall Quantum first, then I install ESR, all the addon, bookmarks... should just appear and work automatically like the Firefox version before Quantum correct?

Thanks

When the Firefox 52 installer sees a Firefox program folder, it will do an "upgrade type" installation, replacing your Quantum program files with the old version. That's why you usually do not need to uninstall when running a different version installer. However, the Firefox 56.0.1 update installed 64-bit Firefox into the folder normally used by 32-bit Firefox, so it's a bit more confusing now than it used to be, predicting what will happen if you run a 64-bit installer. (The foregoing is not applicable to Mac/Linux.)

Does it mean that if I have Quantum now (I only have Quantum in my PC now), and if I install ESR now, after installing ESR, Quantum will disappear and only ESR is in my PC? Is it like Quantum has "upgraded" to ESR?

Do you mean the 59 version will still be an ESR 59 or is it a Quantum 59 (like the same version with all Quantum users?)?

By that time I think most addons should be compatible with Quantum and I will switch to Quantum, if I uninstall ESR and install Quantum will work fine?
