What determines how long the bookmarks tool stays open? Mine self closes after 3 seconds ... insuffient time.

Is this about the doorhanger (Edit This Bookmark) that opens if you click the star on the Navigation Toolbar?

If you move the mouse pointer in this drop-down dialog then it should stay open. You may have to move the mouse or click in the dialog if the mouse pointer is already in this area when the doorhanger opens.

It has nothing to do with editing bookmarks. It has to do with using bookmarks. I call the bookmark menu and it clears by itself before I can make a selection.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window
