I didn't know all this time Thunderbird has been sending my picture in every email I send. How do I stop it? Can't find the setting for it. This has really disturbed me.

I'd start by checking in Account Settings to see if it has been set to send a signature, or a vCard. If it's sending a signature I think you would have seen it, so the vCard is more likely.

The vCard is like a contact card in your address book and may include a picture.

Do you know how or where in your messages the picture appears? For instance, at the bottom, or in an attachment?

Apparently some people get the photo, some dont. All I found was in my email address in my address book there was a section where a picture had to be selected. It was set to "use a generic picture" but the pic displayed wasn't me, it was a grey outline picture of a head, I deleted my email address from my address book hoping this will fix the problem, but I have no immediate way of telling if it worked. What do you think?

I dont know where in the message the recipient saw my real picture.

Check all these settings related to signatures, shown in the first picture, are switched off.

Is it possible that some correspondents have your picture in their address books? The Outlook email client is very keen to show a picture if it has one to hand.

The second attached image shows what I see when Outlook can find a picture of the sender. I don't see this image in the same message when viewed in Thunderbird, so it appears that Outlook calls it from a company address book.

You cant switch off picture settings. An Outlook recipient didnt get the photo. No one has my picture in their address books. I deleted my email address from my address book, this should hopefully do the job.

I suggest you ask someone that is getting your picture to click on reply and send the mail back to you. Then at least you will know where they are seing your picture.

It might be they are using a mail product that includes a picture, much as my picture appear in posts to this forum.

They did reply back Matt. But there was no picture. They could only have gotten my picture from the email I sent them. Please give more advice. Thanks, Robert

Could only have? not so. For example, if I add a picture of someone to my phone mail client, new mail in the phone incorporates that photo as part of the email from to personalize things.

So unless the person has never had the opportunity to see a photo of you. You can not assume that what they see is what you send. For instance I have contact that I have migrated here and there but at some point Facebook populated those that were in facebook with photos.

Unfortunately none of us know all the software, and when folks tell you something, knowing their level of expertise is important to understand what they are trying to articulate.

For instance see this discussion on outlook users seeing the sender photo. Could your correspondent be using this and not be aware of it?

Matt, Sorry I have post traumatic stress disorder and its hard to follow everything in your last message. The email and reply was sent to my psychiatrist. He doesn't have any social connection to me. He doesn't have a Facebook account but I do. Are you able to give me any more advice? preferably short easy to follow advice? It was my first email to him and he spoke like he has never seen it before. Thanks, Robert

The situation sounds too complex when you consider not knowing what email software people use and that Facebook is adding photos. I had thought changing email software to fix the problem but from your advice I gather there's no certain way of fixing the problem when it comes to all email recipients not receiving my photo. I recently deactivated my Facebook account permanently for other personal reasons but in my opinion I have no idea what effect that will have. I assume many of the people I sent emails to in the past will still have my photo in their email programs and can only hope that future emails to never before sent email addresses won't show my photo now that my Facebook account is deactivated. But I just don't know for sure about this. Facebook are a bunch of wankers for invading my privacy without my consent and not even informing me that they do this kind of thing. Maybe they have this privacy issue info buried deep within a multitude of text in their terms and conditions.
