Cannot send message with new identity/alias
I created a new alias following thunderbird instructions. However, when I try to send email through thunderbird using the new alias, I get the following error message:
An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: You are not authorized to send mail as <email deleted for privacy>. Please verify that your email address is correct in your account settings and try again.
I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Please help. Thanks, halpen

Which smtp server is the identity set up to use? Some services, like Gmail, require the sending server to match the identity or account from which the message is sent, e.g. you can't send from a comcast account through the gmail smtp server.
Hello, thanks for your help! I use Bell sympatico mail in Canada, so it's set up to go through smtphm.sympatico.ca which is my default sever. what you are describing above may indeed be the problem. i will look into that.
On their support page, it's stated that "12. Email aliases...will not immediately be available..." It's not exactly the same as an identity in TB, but it may mean you have to add a new account instead and make sure each account sends on the correct smtp server.

when you say add a new account, do you mean create a new account in thunderbird instead of a new identity?
Yes, start from File/New/Existing Mail Account and add the account, then make sure all your Bell accounts have their outgoing servers match the incoming servers (same user name and password). The new account will show up under the previous ones in Tools/Account Settings and the Folder Pane.
