Firefox appears to be using the most data on my broadband connection. I checked the data usage in Windows 10 and it's the highest user with over 4gb while the rest of the items are using less than 100mb. Is there a way to find out what's using so much data from the browser? In just browsing to find this answer Firefox used .5GB. I went to a few sites like cnet, mozilla support, etc. That's a ton of data used in a very short time.

This is a normal amount of usage for the 30 day period which is displayed on Windows 10. For example, I have used just under 5GB of data over the past 30 days according to Windows 10.

The amount of usage will depend on how much browsing you are doing and what you are browsing. This data statistic also includes most videos that are played through the browser.

For example, Facebook uses roughly 10MB per visit. This number my vary depending on what is on your news feed, since images take up more space, and each time you scroll and addition content is loaded, that number will increase.

In most cases, internet data usage is not a concern for desktop users on a WiFi or Ethernet since the data caps are typically higher than mobile networks. Unless you are frequently going over or getting close to going over your data cap your internet data cap, I would recommend not worrying digging into your usage because it takes more time than it's worth.

Your browsing history should give you a pretty good idea how much browsing you are doing. Lightbeam is a good tool that allows you to see what websites you visit and how they are connected. The Network Monitor can also be used to see what is using the data on a specific website.

Thanks for you response.

This is actually for just half the cycle. The cycle only allows for 10GB of data as well. The 5GB was used up with keeping the wifi connection disconnected regularly, not downloading any updates unless chosen, and all other data saver techniques in play. I feel like this usage is far too high for a family that doesn't even let their kids go on the internet. There are no other devices connected, and the computer is just used to check email/facebook maybe once a day.

On a side note, when using Windows 8 this was not an issue. The data usage skyrocketed after updating to Windows 10. However, as you saw, the only thing using any noticeable amount of data was Firefox.

If the usage really is just from checking email and viewing facebook notifications (which I highly doubt) then can you suggest a plugin/add-on that would show a person how much data they're using so that it can be a conscious choice rather than just blowing through all the data in a day?

Thanks!

You could try setting your Flash Player Plugin to Click to activate so any Flash videos and Ads on sites do not load and waste bandwidth while you are looking at various pages.

Its possible Win10 could be using up some bandwidth also by doing various checking for updates and such depending on your settings in Win10.
