Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer. Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.

That would make me a little crazy...

In case one of your extensions is involved, could you test opening a new tab in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.

You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

Not all add-ons are disabled: Flash and other plugins still run

After Firefox shuts down, a small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Reset).

Any difference?

One Windows 7 user discovered a sound caused by a theme pack. To prevent it, he needed to turn off the Menu Command sound in the Windows Control Panel.

Start menu > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound category > Change system sounds > (in the dialog) Sounds tab

A couple of Mac users found they could suppress the sound by setting the QuickTime plugin to "Never Activate", but that doesn't really solve the mystery of what is triggering the sound to play in the first place.
