When I open a tab it takes me to the aol homepage which I do not want. I want it to open up the page that has the 9 little boxes for pinning sites.

Try to use the SearchReset extension to reset some preferences to the default values.

Note that the SearchReset extension only runs once and then uninstalls automatically, so it won't show on the "Firefox > Add-ons" page (about:addons).
