Sorry, but what didn't work? There's no Ask toolbar installed?

Two more steps.

(1) Home page. You can reset your home page using the steps described in this article: How to set the home page | How to | Firefox Help.

(2) Search engine. If Ask has taken over the address bar search, you can set that back to Google. The steps take a long time to write out, so I'm going to link to a thread with the options: How do I get FF4 to use Google's I'm feeling lucky feature? | Firefox Support Forum | Firefox Help.

You should be able to disable or remove the Ask toolbar here:

Tools menu > Add-ons > Extensions category

Hopefully that will fix the search as well.

I also think that Firefox does not install the Ask toolbar or the Ask search engine - check the place where you got the installation kit and maybe report it.

If you by any chance use Avira's free antivir - the latest version does install that both for IE and Firefox as a "web security addon". If you don't like it, you can uninstall it from add/remove programs (programs and features on vista / w7).

Also Ask toolbar comes bundled with other free softwares which are normally payed for: e.g. Nero.

Cheers.
