Firefox seems to go idle when the mouse is not being used. VERY FRUSTRATING!!!!

Firefox seems to go idle when I'm not using the mouse, then resumes once I move the mouse and only while the mouse is being used. Downloads go idle until I move the mouse. Emails will not send until I move the mouse. It's driving me nuts. Why is this?
