downloaded files no longer open automatically - I need to double click them in the Downloads window
In the past when I dowloaded files they opened automatically. I use Windows Vista

The action taken will depend partly on the type of file downloaded, and then on the settings made either by yourself, or changed by one of the extensions added to firefox. See Manage file types and download actions in Firefox and possibly also Basic troubleshooting
