If you don't want the security updates then turn off automatic updates. I am glad that Mozilla respond quickly to security issues and releases updates to fix them.

You posted here with Firefox 3.6.9, you're missing the last three updates.
The average update interval in Firefox 3.6 versions has been like once a month.

Firefox 3.6.10 was released in late September. Firefox 3.6.11 was released last week, followed by 3.6.12 two or three days later to address a specific Bug that was reported by a security specialist on the day that 3.6.11 was released. A 48 hour "fix" is very unusual, I have only seen that happen once before in the last 5 years.

As TonyE said, you can turn off updates yourself, if you don't want them. If you used the "Ask me later" option in the update notification window to not accept the update, Firefox will probably ask you about installing the update every time you use Firefox for more than 5 minutes, once each day.

Well guess what -- THEY ARE TURNED OFF.

It's kinda like when you go to a page that has both secure and unsecure items on the page, and a pop-up warns you about that, including a checkbox to say you don't want to be warned about that again -- a checkbox which has absolutely zero effect the next time you visit the same page.

Sorry, fellas, I know y'all mean well and everything, and I really do like using Firefox. But my frustration level is reaching new highs, compounded by the fact that virtually every other product on the machine wants to STOP AND GET UPDATES every time you say "boo." It's reaching new levels of absurdity.

I know it's a bad idea and all, but I'm to the point where I'm ready to tell everybody STOP FIXING BUGS. Let me get some work done first.

Using the "Ask me what I want to do" option isn't the same as turning off the updates by un-checking the three boxes above that.

Maybe you'll find Firefox 4.0 more suitable. It will install updates silently and won't require any user action or notification at all; similar to how Chrome handles its' program updates.

As far as the warning about secure and insecure content on the same page, blame the website that has supposedly secure pages like that for blowing smoke up your bum. If they're sending you a "secure" page - HTTPS - everything on that page should be "secure", otherwise they expose you to a potential cross-scripting exploit from the insecure content. Don't fault Firefox because other browsers don't warn you about mixed content like that on what "you" expect is is a "safe page" based upon it appearing to be an HTTPS connection.

I don't fault Firefox for warning about mixed secure and unsecure web content, and I don't fault it for not following how other browsers handle the issue.

Where I fault Firefox is when it ignores when I check the box that says I don't want to be warned about it anymore. There happens to be a simple workaround, but it's an annoyance.

I refer to that issue only to illustrate how it seems sometimes Firefox has a mind of its own, and doesn't particularly care what preferences I give it.

Re: silent updates. That's fine with me, so long as it doesn't slow down what I happen to be doing.

I usually like to turn off even the silent updates because, like it or not, some of us can't afford the latest and fastest systems available on the fastest Internet connections, and when it starts working on its updates it necessarily robs me of valuable resources. I may be switching back and forth between a dozen different windows, and the machine is already starting to slow down; the updates add to the load.

So I'm back to my original complaint -- can we please PLEASE please save the updates until they fit into MY schedule?

The security updates are not the only reason people are getting aggravated with the updates. For me its not only the hassle of "not getting work done" but spending all that time setting up and customizing FireFox to meet your needs only to have them update the engine (if you will) to a new version all the dam time and then you loose all your customizations only to have to go through them all again. Not to mention now the guys that make the personalized graphics addons now have to update there addons as well, and guess what? You gotta wait for them to re-code, if they are up to integrating them with the new engine.

Of all the security issues with the net today, I for one don't worry about them that much, I been using computers since DOS 3.0 on a IBM and have never really had any issues with security other than the occasional virus/Malware. I mean really! If somebody wants to track me or hack into my system that I surf the web with go right ahead cause there's nothing in my system that I wouldn't show my grandmother in the 1st place. The dam Hacker would just get bored looming thru all the system files that he can find on his own computer.

The other day I typed in (after getting aggravated once again) "FireFox Sucks" into Google and I was amazed at my findings of web sites dedicated to shutting down firfox and it's browser, They referred to it as the "Bloatware Browser". I used to Love it but I have now switched to Opera and will not be looking back!!! After loosing all the buttons as simple as the "Add Bookmark to toolbar" and consolidating everything to look like all the other browsers out there I have had enough!! Ta Hell with FireFox!!! You can have it!
