MacOS hardware acceleration doesn't seem to be enabled

Doing various HTML5 benchmark tests, i discovered that my hardware acceleration seems to be off. Manually turning it on in "about:config" doesn't change either. It works perfectly on my desktop pc (windows 10 with latest firefox, and arch linux with v65), just not on my macbook.

this is one of the test. Safari halts auto at 750 fish, chrome at 650. Firefox outputs 15-20fps at 10 fish.

Same deal, Safari at 12500+, chrome at 12500+, but Firefox at 9000. I tried disabling my addons, tweaking performance settings, nothing works. Hardware acceleration just doesn't seem to be on. can anyone advise? thank you!

On further investigation, if I manually disable graphics switching systemwide, relaunch firefox, the hardware acceleration is working as it should. So I think the problem is firefox cannot turn the graphics card on and off on the fly like other browsers seem to be capable of doing.
