While using StockCharts.com, a charting program for analyzing common stocks, I input a stock symbol,i.e. AMZN (Amazon) AMZN becomes the Tab name. If you hold the cursor over AMZN you'll see "AMZN|Sharpchart|stockcharts.com".

Over time the Tab Name morphs to read "https://Stockcharts.com/h-sc/ui".

A second problem sometimes occurs where AMZN (the tab name) morphs on its own to become $INDU|SharpChart|StockCharts.com. INDU is the symbol for the Dow Jones Index.

This is a quality program that I've used for years without these problems.

I contacted StockCharts.com, who said they couldn't identify the problem in their records and suggested I contact Firefox.

Hi shadow21, the tab usually reflects the <title> tag, which is part of the web page. Some pages update the <title> tag after you load them to provide information about what's happening in the page, such as the number of unread messages. I don't know whether it's possible that the StockCharts page is attempting to update the <title>, but its script is incompatible with Firefox, or what else could explain it.

Does the chart page change the title (successfully) in other browsers?

Do you have any add-ons that might touch tab titles/URLs? One way to rule out add-ons is to test the site in Firefox's Safe Mode. In its Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, any userChrome.css/userContent.css files, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox. (On Mac, hold down the option/alt key instead of the Shift key.)

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • (menu bar) Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any difference?

This can happen if there is no title available for the page. The website might update automatically and not always include a page title. When the title is missing then you only see the URL. You can check "Tools -> Page Info -> General".
