I have this weird window that mysteriously appeared after a restart of firefox. I have been unable to identify what it is, where it came from or any other information on it.

Wondering if anyone else has had a similar issue and how I can go about debugging what it is.

Found the answer to this question.

The window is the gfxsanity.html chrome window that is used for gfx sanity testing. Apparently this gets incorrectly made visible on occasion.

See https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1268065 marked as resolved in 48 but I have 49.0.2.

At least I know it is nothing to be to concerned about now.

Let's start with this;

Type about:preferences#general<enter> in the address bar.

There are two settings;

  • When Firefox Starts

When the browser is started, what do you want to display? Many of us choose Show My Home Page.

  • Home Page

When a new page is opened, what do you want to be displayed?

  1. Use Current Page. Use what ever page(s) are open at that time.
  2. Use Bookmark
  3. Restore To Default. about:home shows a Mozilla home page with tools.

You can use any of these that you wish;

about:home (Firefox default home page), about:newtab (shows the sites most visited), about:blank (a blank page),

or you can enter any webpage or about: page you want.
