My custom search engine settings keep changing back on their own--always back to Yahoo from Google even when I delete Yahoo as an option. Mac OS X 10.6.8

Firefox now has the customizable search engine bar. I would like to use Google and have no other search engines as options since this is the only one I really use. However, every time I set it to Google, it changes back to Yahoo within a couple searches. This happens even when I delete Yahoo from the options. Any ideas? In addition, certain websites and links are getting routed to the Yahoo error handler site, even when I search with Google. Seems to happen with only some sites. I know the sites aren't down, perhaps a bug? I am a real novice at computers, so simple, non-technical language would help me best. Hope I have provided enough information. Thanks.

Bookmark and use this; Mozilla Search Reset {web link} This add-on is very simple: on installation, it backs up and then resets your search preferences and home page to their default values, and then uninstalls itself. This affects the search bar, URL bar searches, and the home page.

Settings Guard for Firefox {web link} Detects and resets changes to settings that are frequently done by add-ons and application installers.
