my browser has been taken over by ads, how do I get rid of them?

videos and click ads, highlighted and underlined text. thank goodness no popups. This happen on my pc once before too. but it would seem Mozilla would be immune to this kind of hacking.

note the upper right corner of the ad -- these are what replace the website's ads that would normally be there.
