Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

It's not uncommon for sites to open pop-up windows and then hide them behind the current window so you see them after you close the current window. These are called pop-unders, but basically they are pop-ups and Firefox's built-in pop-up blocker allows for many exceptions to avoid breaking too much website functionality. In particular, if you click on something in a site, a pop-up/pop-under is allowed.

To get a better idea of what sites are generating the windows, you can force the pop-ups into a new tab. That will make them easier to spot so you can associate cause and effect. Here's how:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste link.o and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Confirm that the browser.link.open_newwindow preference is set to its default value of 3 (divert new windows to a tab instead), or right-click > Reset to get that value

(4) Double-click the browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction preference and change the value to 0 (that's a zero) and click OK

You can leave this tab open to undo the change later.

Ultimately, you might conclude that you need a stronger ad blocker or pop-up blocker.
