Why don't the developers listen to the real users?

more options

I didn't really want to start a new thread, I just wanted to reply to a developer's post.

"Hi Bernadine,

I'm one of the developers of the new Firefox UI and I hope I'll be able to answer your question.

You can indeed use the Classic Theme Restorer add-on to bring back many things to way they were.

However, I strongly suggest to try working with this version and layout for a while, even though this change might not be comfortable for you at first. We came up with this new look after thorough testing, user interviews and usability studies for over four years. I understand this might feel for you to drop out of the sky on you all of a sudden, but please understand that all of the new/ updated UI elements are carefully considered.

I hope you understand,

Mike."

This sounds anything but "listening to the users". Take a google trip and ask how to move the refresh icon - it is a contentious subject since FF 4.0 and gets worse as time goes on. This is not listening to the users it is telling the users how it's going to be.

Ergonomically, the refresh icon is in totally the wrong place - the continued ire at not being able to put it somewhere else is proof of that.

Making just about every control except "refresh" movable shows the determination on the part of the developers to tell the user how it's going to be. Be sensible - let the user decide.

I'm probably going to get some snotty reply about not understanding software development.

I've been in IT for over 40 years. I've developed OS device drivers in assembler, I've been in international softwae support and I'm currently selling project management software on an international basis. I use FF, Opera, Chrome and, God help me, Internet Exploder. You are not serving your user base, you're serving yourselves.

If you think you're doing it right, just look around the internet - your users have a different opinion.

I understand that these changes aren't popular with everyone. But this is a support forum, where we try to help users with the Firefox we have today.

You can give input on new/changed features here: https://input.mozilla.org/feedback

Regarding reloading the page, you also have these options:

  • Ctrl+r
  • right-click the page* > Reload

* Avoid form controls and links, which have a different context menu

"... it is a contentious subject since FF 4.0 and gets worse as time goes on." How about viewing that as contiguous? Like contiguous events. The developers moved the 'Reload current page' to the right-side of the Location Bar in Firefox 4, but allowed each user to move it where they wanted it via the Customize feature. Now with another major UI re-do in Firefox 29, that button can't be moved as easily, continuing what they started with Firefox 4.

"Be sensible - let the user decide." Make the decision to install an add-on to change what you don't like, or as an IT professional use your talents to code your own changes either in the core code or via the 3 "user" files.

Even Burger King dropped the "have it your way" concept.
