crash on startup

I am having Firefox crash on startup much like Firefox Desktop crashing on startup, initially in version 140, but I have downgraded to version 139 in my troubleshooting and I'm getting the same symptom.

It is frustrating that this does not seem to leave any records in the Windows event log or the Firefox crash reports, and that the fact that there's a known issue of this severity is rather hard to find.

Hi mozzd,

This is a known issue. Please check out /questions/1519017#answer-1744983 and let us know if any of the workarounds there can fix the problem on your end.

Unfortunately installing 140.0.2 did not solve the problem for me. The firefox1.exe workaround does work, but various features don't work with that, e.g., opening files from File Explorer in Firefox are routed to firefox.exe which crashes, and it doesn't use the same profiles as firefox.exe.

I also checked on the workaround described in the 140.0.2 bug around turning validate handle usage off. It was already off in general and adding the described exception to turn it off did not fix the crash.

Do you need additional information, e.g., crash reports, to investigate this further? If so, how do I get those to you?

What OS? If windows, home or pro? If windows, are you running any security software besides MS Defender? What version of Firefox? If Windows Pro version, try testing in Windows Sandbox (VM) to see if you have the same issue. https://www.howtogeek.com/399290/how-to-use-windows-10s-new-sandbox-to-safely-test-apps/ You can also see what happens with windows in safe mode.

Hi mozzd,

I believe you're running into a different bug than the one fixed in 140.0.2, which is bug 1974259.

Can you try turning off Microsoft's Family Safety feature temporarily to see if it fixes the crashing issue? The team believe that we might be dealing with another crash issue which might be caused by MS's family safety feature.

Microsoft Family Safety is not active on this account, so there is nothing to turn off.

Windows 11 Home, latest update. Bitdefender Firefox 140.0.2

Bitdefender... Can you disable it, reboot, and try again. You can also boot to safe mode and see if you have the same issues.

Gotcha. In that case, can you try disabling Bitdefender as Jonz suggested above?
